These qualities may appear contradictory but they do not have to be so. Several works, including Peter Hujar's 1975 photograph of the Hudson River and Ellsworth Kelly's drawing Light Reflecting on Water (1950), explore connections between the banal and the sublime, particularly in nature. Diane Arbus's photograph Clouds on-screen at a drive-in movie, N.J. (1960), for example, blurs the line between the mundane and the transcendent with its image of a billowing cloud on the movie screen against the evening sky. From there, the publication traces their evolution into the icons we know them as today, with the remaining letters tracing Thek's travels and adventures, romantic dalliances, work and financial ups and downs through 1975.Stay away from nothing reproduces more than 50 letters and postcards, along with drawings and other ephemera; their poetic, quotidian and melancholic tone provide a rare glimpse into Thek and Hujar's relationship as it wavers between seduction, glamour, tumult and mischievousness.
