Original green pebble grain cloth, endpapers browned, bookplate to front pastedown. 782pp. London, John Saunders, With a prefatory analysis of the journeys of Park, Denham, Clapper…ton et al, this work contains accounts of Richard Lander's three expeditions through Africa, taken from his journals and those of his younger brother, John, who accompanied him on his second expedition. Lander will always be associated with the exploration of the Niger. After his 1830 expedition, he became the first recipient of the Royal Geographical Society's gold medal. Lander returned to the Niger in 1832 to continue explorations on behalf of a group of merchants but was killed as the result of a musket ball wound to the thigh.
