Some of the poems are topical and date from the time of the Napoleonic Wars, such as Monody on t…he Death of the Ever to Be Lamented Lord Nelson and On the Greatness and Fall of Buonaparte. Other titles are A Similitude between Life and the Game of Bowls (for anyone compiling a bowling bibliography), Invocation to Apollo, The Deaf and Dumb Boy, etc. After having gone bankrupt as a tanner, Hugman (1770-1846) began an apparently more successful career as an itinerant poet and entertainer. Editions of his poems were vended in various places as he toured with place-appropriate imprints, but probably all were done by Thomas Tippell, a printer in his home town of Halesworth.

Contemporary ownership inscription of Mary Anne Day, York, 1827; and later one of Grace Sophia Hood, 1853. A tanner from Halesworth, Suffolk, John Hugman (1770-1846) travelled the country selling his poems - it… seems that as he went from town to town he had new editions printed. This one, the fourth, was preceded by editions printed at Brighton and Colchester, and many later editions were printed elsewhere, including at Halesworth itself. Most of the editions have the title 'in the amatory, heroic, pathetic, and other styles', but it seems that Hugman may have found 'moral' a more acceptable title for his customers, although it may have varied from place to place. The tally editions seems to have gone as high as the 17th (Halesworth, 1835), although many may have been new issues, rebadging old sheets with new title pages. Copac gives only two locations for this edition, the BL and Cambridge UL.

The sale supposedly took place after Moxon's death in 1858, with Francis Jackson, who claimed to have been a friend of Lamb's, p…urchasing numerous volumes. Latterly, there has been research into Jackson and his grandson Richard C. Jackson, much of it concluding that there was no real connection between the Lambs and the Jacksons, and that the provenance of the 'Relics' is likely to have been fabricated. See G.E. The original title was Original Poems in the Amatory, Heroic, Pathetic and other Styles, but here Moral replaces Amatory, perhaps to improve sales. It was much reprinted, from the ninth edition onwards all in Halesworth, but none survives in more than a few copies.The 'Traveller' John Hugman (1770-1846) was a tanner in the market town of Halesworth in Suffolk, but gave up that occupation to become an itinerant poet, travelling the country to sell his books. 'The Deaf and Dumb Boy' gives a sense of his new career: 'At Portsmouth, one morn, by the Point I was walking, / In search of a subject, by Muse to employ .' Other poems include a 'Monody' on the death of Nelson, 'By the Moon, dearest Mary. Written on the Beach, at Southwold, after a Storm', a melancholy 'Ode to my Summer House' at Halesworth (where, an amateur watercolourist, he used to paint), and 'A Volunteer Song. Written in the Year 1804, at Lowestoft, while performing Garrison Duty there'. Most are signed 'J. H.'Cf. Parnassian Molehill. An Anthology of Suffolk Verse, ed. the Earl of Cranbrook (1953), and C.
