In den WarenkorbFirst and only edition. 8vo. viii, 302 pp. Publisher's linen backed drab boards, black lettered to the spine, printed title label to the upper cover, near contemporary gift inscription reading "E. Phillips / Dec. 1926 / AHP" to the front free endpaper. Frontispiece photographic portraits of both subjects by Emery Walker plus 4 photographic plates. Slight soiling to the covers, else very good. The scarce and poignant memoir of Evelyn Southwell and Malcolm White who met whilst teaching at Shrewsbury School. The two became very close friends, becoming collectively known as "The Men" and referring to each other as "Man". On the death of a mutual friend in battle in 1915, both men enlisted and corresponded with each other as they saw active service in the following year. White made it to 1st July 1916 before being killed at the Somme, Southwell lasting another two months before also being killed in the same battle on 15th September. On their demise Howson, their fellow Shrewsbury master, compiled this memoir from his own memories of the men and their correspondence and diaries.
