Bound in blue publisher's cloth with gilt titles on front cover and spine. Front cover's gilt has faded and somewhat oxidized; spine is bright. Front cover has white spotting. Pastedowns agetoned, and some spotting in prelims, but text block crisp. Dr Anna Hude was the first female recipient of a doctorate in Denmark. Her academic scholarship focused on Medieval social structure, while she was also active as a advocate for women's sufferage. However, in 1908, she turned from both the medieval and the modern towards what lays beyond the viel, focusing on spiritualism. Five years later, in 1913, she published "Evidence for the Communication with the Dead, " which surveys the leading mediumship cases studied by the Society for Psychical Research - including Théodore Flournoy's investigations of Hélène Smith, the automatic writing of Mrs. Verrall and Mrs. Holland, the "cross-correspondences, " and especially the American medium Leonora Piper. Hude systematically weighs rival explanations for these phenomena - ordinary imagination and cryptomnesia, telepathy from the living, and clairvoyance - against the hypothesis that the dead themselves are communicating. She argues that while lesser mediums' performances can be dismissed as fantasy or unconscious memory, the more elaborate and consistent personalities produced through Mrs. Piper (such as "George Pelham") strain naturalistic explanations and point toward genuine survival after death. The book closes by extending this argument to later mediums studied by Professor Hyslop, presenting their continuity with the earlier cases as further support for her conclusion.…
