Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'A Defence of Liberty Against Tyrants' is a foundational masterpiece of political philosophy and resistance theory. Written during the height of the French Wars of Religion, this work offers a profound inquiry into the limits of monarchical authority and the rights of the governed. The treatise is structured around four critical questions concerning the duty of subjects to obey or resist rulers who command actions contrary to the law of God or the well-being of the state.Drawing upon legal, historical, and biblical precedents, the text argues that a king's power is not absolute but is instead a delegated trust. It introduces the influential concept of a twofold covenant: one between God and the people, and another between the ruler and the people. When a monarch violates these sacred obligations and becomes a tyrant, the work asserts that the people-represented by their magistrates-possess a moral and legal right to resist. 'A Defence of Liberty Against Tyrants' remains a cornerstone of early modern thought, having directly influenced the development of constitutionalism, social contract theory, and the philosophical foundations of modern democratic revolutions. It is an essential read for those interested in the history of political science and the evolution of civil liberties. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Vindiciae, contra tyrannos was the most infamous of the monarchomach treatises produced during the French wars of religion, and continued to be revered (or execrated) as a key part of the radical canon for well over a century after its publication. It is one of the first attempts to advance a systematic justification, with interlocking secular and religious arguments, of resistance against legitimately constituted political authority. This edition presents the first complete and accurate English translation of the work, a comprehensive apparatus, and an introduction which provides the first detailed analysis of the argument and also reconsiders the much-disputed question of authorship. It will be of interest to a wide range of scholars working on the history of political thought and early modern Europe.

In den Warenkorb. Small 8vo. 264p. Seventeenth century calf, gilt back with red label, red edges. Old name on title, vague damp stain in last 20 pages. A nice copy. First (only) French edition. Originally published anonymously in 1579 as Vindiciae contra tyrannos'. There seems to be no definitive answer as to who the real author was, but it is likely that it was a collective production. Despite the title stating that this is a new translation, no other translation is known. The translation has been attributed to Francois Estienne. This translation more sought after than the Latin original' (Brunet)This was the most famous and important text that came from the French protestants, which gives the most complete summary of Huguenot revolutionary theory. In it, the author(s) give(s) answers to four - seemingly rhetorical - questions: Are subjects bound to obey princes if their orders contradict the law of God? If it is permissible to resist a prince who wants to break the law of God or who ruins the church? If it is permissible to resist a prince who oppresses or ruins a public state, and to what extent this resistance and to what extent this resistance may be carried? If neighboring princes can or are required by law to give aid to the subjects of other princes, afflicted because of true religion, or oppressed by manifest tyranny'.*Hauser 2220. Brunet I,c.1308.
