Rare édition originale de ce fameux ouvrage d'Edwin Howlett, directeur de l'académie de dressage de Paris, qu'il fit tirer à petit nombre pour ses élèves. Elle est illustrée de 20 planches de photographies hors texte et de nombreuses figures dans le texte. Demi-maroquin vert à coins et à dos long à la Bradel, couverture conservée, initiales B.V. surmontées d'une couronne de vicomte en bas du dos (Victor Champs). Petites épidermures, coins émoussés, dos très légèrement assombri, des rousseurs sur les planches. Un bel ouvrage. Edwin Howlett (1835-) créa la plus célèbre des écoles à destination des cochers de grandes maisons. Son père était premier cocher du marquis de Hertford. Là commence son apprentissage qui le conduira au service du Prince Périclès Gikha, de l'honorable Spencer Cowper. Il donnera même des leçons au jeune Prince de Galles, futur Edouard VII. Son premier manège se situe rue Jean Goujon à Paris. Il en ouvre un autre à Neuilly où il enseigne l'art de conduire à quatre chevaux à toute l'aristocratie de l'ancien et du nouveau monde (les riches familles d'Amérique de passage à Paris comme les Gerrys ou les Vanderbilt).
