Voyages made in the years 1788 and 1789 to the northwest coast of America. 1790. Fur trade --Northwest, Pacific. Northwest Coast of North America. Series: The Canadian historical studies, a library of historical research Canadian historical studies. Summary: Both Dixon and Meares commanded trading vessels in the early days of maritime fur trade; both arrived for the first time on the N.W. coast of America in the summer of 1786, and both made numerous discoveries during their expeditions in that area. In 1790, Meares published his triumphant 'Voyages,' in which he recalled his involvement in the 'Nootka Sound Controversy' and boasted of his exploratory ventures in North America. Dixon contended that this account was largely false and that Meares had claimed credit which rightly belonged to others. Howay's synthesis of this bitter controversy includes Dixon's 'Remarks on the Voyages of John Meares,' Meares' refutation of these charges, and Dixon's 'Further Remarks on the Voyages of John Meares. 3 Kg.

Both volumes bound in in 3/4 leather and blue cloth with gilt letters on the spine. Marbled endpapers and top edges gilt. Both volumes have wear to extremities with corners rubbed through, leather starting to dry out, gilt bright, just hints of foxing here and there, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. Alas, these volumes are not whole and complete. As often happens with multiple volume works that are reprinted, signatures, as well as illustrations, are duplicated or missing. In Vol. 1, between pp. 83 and 97, there are 10 illustrations, which are not listed in the List of Illustrations, and which actually appear between the same pages in Vol. 2. Missing from Vol. 1 in these pages are two illustrations: p.84, A Man and Woman of Nootka Sound, and p.94, Mount St. Elias and the New Eddystone. In Vol. 2, the signature containing pp. 545-560 is missing; p. 544 has an image of the Legislative Assembly 1909, which is not listed in the List of Illustrations; and pp. 673-690 are duplicated. Otherwise, all illustrations are present and in fine condition. There is no date of publication listed in Vol. 1; but Vol. 2 has the date 1914 printed on the title page. NOTE: Price reflects these defects and extra postage will be required for shipping these heavy volumes.
