This edition offers alternative readings based on Fauré's piano-roll recording of the third romance. Following the release in 2003 of the Urtext Peters Edition publication of Fauré's Pièces brèves (EP 7601), the eminent French music specialist Roy Howat has taken an in-depth look at another lesser-known collection of piano pieces by Gabriel Fauré - Romances sans paroles - to reveal further treasures. Romances sans paroles is French for 'Lieder ohne Worte' or 'Songs without words'. Fauré's only three pieces in the genre, suggesting a youthful homage to Mendelssohn, were his first piano pieces to be published. Exactly when he composed them is uncertain, though most of his biographers suggest it could havebeen any time from 1863 onwards (the year he turned eighteen). In fact the Romances sans paroles are not easy, given the pianist's dual occupation with complex accompaniments and melodies that sometimes echo imitatively across voices. (Fauré was ambidextrous, and the pieces might be viewed in several ways asétudes.) It was thus not surprising that theysoon became as popular, if not more so, in arrangements by Jules Delsart for violin or cello accompanied by piano, published by Hamelle in 1896. Whether on Delsart's or Hamelle's initiative, these transcriptions bowdlerise many of Fauré's more daring passing harmonies, especially in the second Romance, the music's full adventurousness, manifest in the piano version, has therefore been long masked from many listeners and performers.…

Throught detailed analyses of the piano pieces Reflets dans l'eau and L'isle joyeuse and the symphonic poem La mer, Dr Howat shows how the pieces are built precisely and intricately around the two ratios of Golden Section and bisection so that the music is organised in various geometrical patterns which contribute substantially to its expansive and dramatic impact. The final chapter traces evidence of whether the proportional systems were designed consciously, and if so, where and why Debussy might have learnt such techniques. The evidence includes his involvement in the Symbolist movement and in esotericism. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

'Mi-a-ou' should always have been known as 'Messieu Auol' (reflecting an infant pronunciation of the eponymous Dolly's older brother, Raoul), and 'Kitty-Valse' should have been 'Ketty-Valse', inspired ironically not by a cat but by the family dog! For such a cornerstone of the repertoire, Roy Howat - who personally knew Dolly Bardac, the suite's dedicatee - finds a surprisingly high number of source discrepancies to evaluate in the comprehensive critical commentary, including an indication that Fauré conceived the famous opening 'Berceuse' at a more flowing tempo than has become habitual over the decades. Based on his intimate knowledge of Fauré, he also urges the performers to keep rubato to a minimum, and keep the pedalling light.Fauré's Dolly suite honours Hélène Bardac (1892-1985), second child of Fauré's close friend Emma Bardac, the talented singer for whom he composed La bonne chanson. The infant Hélène's diminutive size, together with the contemporary anglomania, led to her being nicknamed 'Dolly', and this remained with her throughout her life. Fauré presented this young girl with a lullaby for piano duet (the 'Berceuse'), possibly for her first birthday on 20 June 1893. Three more pieces followed: on her second birthday, on New Year's Day 1895, and on her fourth birthday in June 1896.The final two movements were added that autumn to complete the suite on 17 November 1896. In fact the 'Berceuse' had been composed 30 years earlier, when Fauré was eighteen, for Suzanne Garnier, the young daughter of a family friend in Tarbes.Dolly op. 56 für Klavier zu 4 HändenFauré wäre erfreut gewesen zu erfahren, dass diese Ausgabe die fehlgeleiteten Katzenassoziationen in den Titeln des zweiten und vierten dieser Stücke korrigiert.
