Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In this gripping account of the 1878 Danish-Arctic Expedition, Hovgaard paints a vivid picture of life in one of the harshest and most remote parts of the world. With his keen eye for detail and gift for storytelling, Hovgaard brings to life the beauty, danger, and isolation of the Arctic landscape, and shares his insights on the cultures and customs of the indigenous peoples he encounters. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of Arctic exploration.

Original Danish edition of this account of the expedition of the "Vega" to trace a Northeast Passage through the Arctic (1878-1880) led by the Finnish-born Swedish explorer Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld (1832-1901). The "Vega" was the first ship to make the passage along the northern coasts of Europe and Asia. Starting from Karlskrona on 22 June 1878, the Vega doubled Cape Chelyuskin in the following August, and after being frozen in at the end of September near the Bering Strait, completed the voyage successfully in the following summer. Upon returning to Stockholm, Nordenskiöld was made a baron and a Commander in the Order of the North Star. Many geographical features in Greenland and off the coast of Siberia are named for him.
