"Est-il des moyens de rendre les Juifs plus utiles et plus heureux en France ? Telle était la question posée en 1785 par la Société des Arts et Sciences de Metz pour son concours de 1787. Les trois mémoires couronnés dénonçaient l'oppression dont les Juifs étaient victimes et plaidaient en faveur de leur assimilation. Témoignage parmi d'autres, mais d'un éclat particulier, d'une évolution que la Révolution accélérera et sanctionnera par le décret de la Constituante du 27 septembre 1791. Les Editions d'Histoire Sociale (ou E.D.H.I.S.) ont reproduit, en fac-similé, le corpus des textes les plus importants relatifs à l'émancipation des Juifs par la Révolution. En trois volumes sont regroupés les trois discours récompensés par la Société de Metz, et signés de l'Abbé Grégoire, de l'avocat de Nancy Thierry et de Zalkind Hourwitz, Juif d'origine polonaise ; on les a fait précéder de l'essai du comte de Mirabeau "Sur Moses Mendelssohn", publié également en 1787 et inspiré des mêmes idées que les trois discours. Ces quatre volumes composent la meilleure des préfaces à l'oeuvre même de la Révolution. Pour comprendre l'importance de celle-ci, quatre séries de textes ont été réunies. Tout d'abord les adresses, mémoires et pétitions des Juifs eux-mêmes constituent un passionnant volume, de la "Requête à Nosseigneurs les Etat-Généraux en faveur des Juifs", jusqu'aux "Observations" d'Aaron Ravel sous l'an III. Ainsi peut être évalué sur pièces l'effort entrepris par les Juifs pour être intégrés à la nation. Un autre volume, le 6e de la collection, rassemble des discours, adresses rapports, procès-verbaux émanant de la Commune et des disctricts de Paris en 1790-1791, et révélant la pression exercée par les organisations révolutionnaires parisiennes sur la Constituante. Le volume suivant recueille les textes de l'Assemblée nationale (1789-1791) qui définissent et illustrent la nouvelle législation.
