One of the best known works of Mir Mosharraf Hossain, Bishad Sindhu (Ocean of Melancholy) is an epic historical novel centred on events that led to the battle of Karbala and its aftermath. The book revolves around the tragic story of Hassan and Hussein, grandsons of the great Prophet Muhammad, who were exterminated by their bitter enemy Yazid, the son of the king of Damascus, for his desire for ZainabHassan's beautiful wifeand his greed for the throne of Medina. The plot is dramatic, has a mythical undertone to it, and deeds of heroism and supernatural occurrences render an epic flavour to its narrative. The storyline explores the sufferings and agonies of human life and the covetousness and hatred of men, and, at the same time, imparts a historical background to the bloodbath and killings that took place in Karbala, Iraq on the 10th of October, AD 680. Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Foreword. Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. Pottery. 3. Sculpture. 4. Plaque. 5. Brick. 6. Objects of daily use. Glossary. Bibliography. Index. This volume of Catalogue contains the curatorial data of 515 terracotta objects from the collection of Bangladesh National Museum. These objects were salvaged from different corners of this country. It is the first publication of its kind in this deltaic land of Bangladesh. They include pots, sculptural objects, architectonic art pieces, plaques developed as building material and even household objects. They were manufactured in different phases of history by certain artisan communities, kumars or kumbhakars by title. These communities, however, are now already on the verge of extinction, therefore the objects arrayed in this tome are gradually disappearing. As a result, they can presently be listed as endangered cultural products belonging to a unique representations of a people. In turn, they help to recognize the multi-faceted technological diffusion, distribution of settlement pattern, taste of different classes and castes as well as the economical conditions through which the nation reached a stage of civilization. Each object has been described according to a methodology that seeks to define its typology and character and is presented along with a photograph supported by an official object ID and the record sheet in order to increase the interest of the archaeologists, historian, folklorists and museum personnel alike. Thus, we hope, this catalogue would be of much use to the professionals, researchers and the general readers as well. (jacket).…
