In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition, 2nd Issue. (Westward Expansion / America / Overland Guides) HORN'S OVERLAND GUIDE, FROM THE U. S. INDIAN SUB-AGENCY, COUNCIL BLUFFS, ON THE MISSOURI RIVER, TO THE CITY OF SACRAMENTO, IN CALIFORNIA; by Hosea B. Horn. New York: J. H. Colton, 1852. FIRST EDITION, Second Issue. 16mo - 6-1/4" x 3-15/16". [iii], iv, [3], 8-83, [1] pp. plus 18 pp. publisher's advertisements at rear. Bound in original blind-stamped brown cloth-covered boards with the title stamped in gilt to the center of the front cover. Plain endpapers. Complete with the large folding map measuring 13-3/4" H x 20-3/4" W attached inside the back cover. Housed in a custom collector's green half-leather over matching cloth-covered board slipcase with gilt titles and ornate decoration to the spine. This copy represents the scarce second issue of the first edition, distinguished by the inclusion of the "opinions of the press" on page [5], and the longer pagination of the main text. The physical condition of the item is graded VERY GOOD (utilizing the standard antiquarian book grading scale for works on paper). The cloth binding is remarkably clean and tight, showing only light wear to the corners and to the head and tail of the spine, along with two light abrasions to the front cover; the internal leaves are clean with occasional mild toning, featuring a small, localized wormhole in the final three blank leaves at the rear; the fragile folding map is exceptionally well-preserved, showing only a few minor splits at the intersections of the folds without loss; the accompanying slipcase exhibits some rubbing to the corners and spine ends. Published just three years after the initial spark of the California Gold Rush, Hosea B. Horn's manual stood as the definitive administrative and geographic handbook for emigrants traversing the central route. Unlike many speculative, third-party guides compiled by stay-at-home eastern publishers, Horn's guide was uniquely distinguished by its scientific precision. Horn, who operated from the U.S. Indian Sub-Agency at Council Bluffs, tracked the entire overland route utilizing a mechanical road-measurer (or odometer). This allowed him to establish an incredibly strict and reliable table of distances starting from the Council Bluffs Agency Ferry and ending in Sacramento City. The detailed notations systematically trace critical survival resources, pinpointing rivers, creeks, lakes, springs, mountains, and camp sites, alongside practical remarks regarding regional timber quality, forage grasses, and road conditions. Prominent Americana collector Thomas W. Streeter lauded it as "one of the best of the guides, as it is one of the few where the distances were closely measured," while bibliographer Wright Howes declared it "the best handbook for the central route available at the time." Due to the grueling physical conditions of the overland trail, guidebooks of this era were treated as highly utilitarian ephemera. While copies have steadily found their way into institutional preservation over the last century, locating a copy in original, unrestored publisher's cloth with the fragile folding map completely intact remains an exceptional challenge for the active collector. Because these maps were printed on delicate paper and repeatedly unfolded in wind, rain, and dust on the trail, they are routinely found with heavy tape repairs, severe loss, or missing entirely. Unrestored examples that survive in this state of preservation are increasingly difficult to acquire on the private market. It remains a legendary cornerstone of Western Americana, heavily cited across primary bibliographies including Howes H641, Cowan (p. 292), and Streeter (3170). THIS EXCEPTIONALLY WELL-PRESERVED AND MAP-COMPLETE FIRST EDITION COPY OF HORN'S OVERLAND GUIDE REPRESENTS A CRITICAL ACQUISITION FOR INSTITUTIONAL SPECIAL COLLECTIONS OR EXTRAORDINARY PRIVATE COLLECTIONS DEVOTED TO THE HISTORY OF WESTWARD EXPANSION, AMERICAN CARTOGRAPHY, OR THE CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH.…

In den WarenkorbZustand: Near Fine. Second Issue. 16mo. dark cloth, stamped in blind, with gilt title to front board. (83, [1] pp. plus 18pp. publisher's advertisements at rear. Pages 77-78 bound in reverse, as has been observed in other copies). The gilt title, stamped to front board ("Horn's Overland Guide to California") shows some fading in the letter "N" (HORN'S) and the "A" in California. Gilt title to front board is straight (not slanted). A tideline from an long-ago spill extends along the bottom edge of the text block, often arching upward, throughout the entire book, gradually decreasing in size and intensity. Some spotting to otherwise fairly bright pages, but none to obscure. Stitching tight. Book itself on front pastedown, bears the well-known and oft-used 19th-century ditty, written in pencil by previous owner, transcribed here as best as this cataloguer's knowledge of Klingon-like script can make out: "Richard Packards (?) Book bought in ag (? For August?) 1857 (?) When i have Died and in my grave and all my bones are Rotten pray look at this and think of me when I am quite forgotten" Large folding map (12.99 in. x 20.08 in. / 51 cm. x 33 cm.). Occasionally spotting. Map now removed and protected in archival mylar. Map (dated 1852) in very good condition, a bit crinkled, and shows some small tears at a fold. The Overland Route hand-marked in red, forking off to Salt Lake City, California and Oregon. Map will be mailed under separate cover in a tube. All housed in hard-shell, green, cloth-covered tri-fold protector, and this, within a lovely, half-bound dark green half-morocco slipcase, over marbled boards, ruled in gilt. Five raised bands, decorated with gilt bead roll, to slipcase spine. Four of the six compartments double-framed in gilt, with a gilt design within, and maroon-colored dot to the center of each design, the other three (from top to bottom) showing in gilt, respectively, a shortened title, author's last name, and at very bottom, the publication year (1852). The first edition of this important guide and map was issued in several page lengths, 78 pp. and 83 pp., of which this is the second issue. As with the first issue, this copy dated 1852 , On page 5, under the section titled "Certificates", there are several testimonials -- one from J.M. Shepherd, former editor of the "Iowa Democrat", who "traveled the whole of the Overland Route in company with H.B. Horn, Esq.", and a second testimonial from three travelers (H.S. Ferguson, Ohio; J.A. Johnson, Illinois; and Walter C. Wright, Missouri) who twice traversed the Overland Route. All recommend Horn's Guide, seemingly without reservation. The Council Bluffs Ferry notice appears on p.84. Hosea Horn was an attorney from Bloomington (what is now Muscatine), Iowa. Entirely self-educated, he wrote a form book for justices of the peace and constables, as well as a History of Davis County Iowa, published in the (1864) Annals of Iowa (Wagner-Camp 214). In the Preface, Hosea Horn writes: ".Many works, purporting to be Guides, have been offered to the public, and as many have proven worthless. But a small portion of the road traveled by the Author of this work is embraced in any other Guide, he having traveled all the cut-offs. The distances, etc., of the other routes are given, nevertheless, in the Appendix. The distance from place to place is accurately shown, and each camping place particularly pointed out, so that the emigrant may know as well in the morning at what point he must camp, as he does in the evening; thus saving many a mile's drive over a bad road in the dark." Horne's Guide has been called the "best hand-book for the central route available at the time" (Howes H-641). Our copy Includes "Opinons of The Press" (p. 5), a 14-page section (pp. 69-83) of "Business Advertisements", and concludes with an 18 pp. "Catalogue of Maps, Charts, Books, Etc., Published by J.H. Colton. The text consists of a lengthy list of "Notable Places, Objects and Remarks," and follows the trail in a detailed, step-by-step fashion, with mileage charts, distances between places, etc. Very Good Plus and Map Very Good in Near Fine Slipcase Hardcover, in half-leather slipcase.…

In den Warenkorb1st Edition. First edition, second issue, with the "opinions of the press" on page five, and the longer pagination of the main text. Large folding map, with route marked by hand in red. 83, [1], 18ads pp. 1 vols. 16mo. "Best handbook for the central route available at the time" (Howes) Hosea B. Horn was an Iowa lawyer, author, printer and newspaperman who made the overland trip to California in 1850 and used his experience to produce this detailed guide - the most popular and best known of its day. The text consists of a lengthy list of 'Notable Places, Objects and Remarks,' and describes the trail in a detailed, step-by-step fashion, with the distance between places, and cumulative tally of the total distance covered from Council Bluffs to Sacramento (2011 miles in total). The 5-page "appendix" includes other mileage charts, followed by 15 pages of "Business Advertisements." The map was executed by Colton and shows the entire central route, with all the cut-offs, marked in red. "Especial importance attaches to this work from the fact that it was one of the few guides which actually measured and described much of the route traversed. Horn had personally been over all the 'cut-offs' and he prepared what is possibly the most exact account of the 'Overland Trail' which has come down to us" - Eberstadt. The notes in the Streeter sale catalogue agreed with this assessment calling this work: "One of the best of the guides, as it is one of the few where the distances were closely measured."
