Contemporary Telegraph Tape Announcing His Death in the Sinking of HMS Hampshire, with HMS Hampshire Silver and Tortoiseshell Presentation Box. 1915-1916. Two interesting First World War survivals comprising a contemporary telegraph receiver tape reporting the sinking of HMS Hampshire and the death of Lord Kitchener, together with a silver and tortoiseshell HMS Hampshire presentation box dated 1915. The paper tape measures approximately 2400 mm when extended. Lacking the opening few letters, with several old repairs and creasing from having been rolled, but substantially complete and legible considering its fragile format. Good condition. The transmitted report reads, with minor losses and imperfections: "[His M]ajesty's ship Hampshire with Lord Kitchener and his staff on board was sunk last night about 8 o'clock to the west of the Orkney Islands either by a mine or torpedo. Four boats were seen by observers on shore to leave the ship. The weather was [.] and heavy seas were running. Vessels and destroyers at once proceeded to the spot and a party was sent along the coast to search but only some bodies and a capsized boat have been found [.]. As the whole shore has been searched there is no hope of there being any survivors. No [.] had yet been received from the search party on shore. HMS Hampshire was on her way to Russia." Accompanying the tape is a circular silver-mounted tortoiseshell presentation box, approximately 80 mm in diameter and 30 mm deep, raised on four feet, with hinged lid and cushioned interior. The lid is applied with a crowned Hampshire rose above a ribbon inscribed "H.M.S. HAMPSHIRE" and the date "1915". Hallmarked silver and bearing the retailer's mark of The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd. The firm, established in 1880 by William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman, was one of London's leading jewellers and silversmiths and was particularly associated with high-quality presentation silver and specially commissioned pieces. The naval insignia and 1915 date indicate that the box was produced as an HMS Hampshire presentation or commemorative piece during the ship's service and, significantly, before her loss the following year. HMS Hampshire was lost off Orkney on 5 June 1916 while carrying Field Marshal Lord Kitchener and his staff on a diplomatic mission to Russia. Kitchener, Secretary of State for War and one of the most recognisable British figures of the First World War, was among the members of his party lost with the ship. The tape is particularly striking for the immediacy of its report: the cause is still given as "either by a mine or torpedo", rescue operations remain underway, and the message records the rapidly disappearing hope of finding survivors. An uncommon pairing of two contemporary HMS Hampshire survivals.…

Cairo, 1 May, [ Kitchener of Khartoum (1850-1916) acted as an ?intelligence officer for the relief expedition to the Sudan to rescue Charles George Gordon; he continually pressed Wolseley, the commander of the expedition, to push forward more rapidly. Despite the expedition?s failure to save Gordon, Kitchener emerged with credit and some fame? (ODNB).   Sir Samuel Baker had preceded General Gordon as Governor- general of Sudan. He firmly believed that England should resume its involvement in the future of that country and, after the death of Gordon and the capture of Khartoum by the forces of the Mahdi, ?with considerable foresight regarded Colonel Kitchener as the instrument most likely to bring this about? (ODNB).   Kitchener was determined that Gordon would be avenged. The charismatic Mahdi, whose mystical and implacable view of pure Islam led him to attack Westerners and, in his view, corrupt Ottoman and Egyptian rule, survived Gordon by only five months. At the time of writing, Kitchener was Sirdar, or Commander in Chief, of the Egyptian army. Six years later, on 2 September 1898, Kitchener finally defeated the last forces of Mahdism, led by the Khalifa Abdullah, at the Battle of Omdurman.   Here he writes: "I am immensely obliged to you for your notes which no doubt give the key to the whole question of the reoccupation of the Soudan. I only hope that it may fall to my lot to use your notes and recover the country ? I wish something could be done to clear up the slavery question which I believe now that the religious mania of Mahdism is dying out is the main cause that prevents the Soudanese from kicking out their present oppressors they dread the general freedom of slaves which they believe would be bound to follow a reoccupation of the country .".…

Highly competent album of drawings of fortifications, mines, and elevations by the young Kitchener while a student at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Kitchener (1850-1916), born in Ireland to English parents and raised in Switzerland, spent "an undistinguished two years" at the Royal Military Academy. When he progressed to the School of Military Engineering, Chatham, he began to distinguish himself. He worked with the Palestine Exploration Fund and on the survey of Cyprus, and gained a reputation as a man who knew the Near East. "In 1884 he acted as an intelligence officer for the relief expedition sent to the Sudan to rescue Charles George Gordon; he continually pressed Wolseley, the commander of the expedition, to push forward more rapidly. Despite the expedition's failure to save Gordon, Kitchener emerged with credit and some fame." He was named sirdar or commander of the Egyptian army in 1892, and instituted needed reforms. Under his leadership, Anglo-Egyptian forces defeated the Mahdist armies in the Sudan in 1898, avenging Gordon's death and reconquering the country. Kitchener's administrative talents came to the fore in the South African War, where superior transportation and the policy of destroying farms and interning Boer civilians in concentration camps prevailed against the guerrilla tactics of the Boer forces. In his role as secretary of state for war in 1914, his advocacy of preparations for a long and global conflict defined British policy. A choice item from early in the career of this larger than life and still controversial figure. Leather and cloth over boards, upper cover stamped in gilt. Upper corners perished. Signed (?Kitchener of Khartoum?), a striking image of the victorious general in uniform and medals. c.145 by 100mm, signed on a light portion at the foot, laid down on the original mount, measuring in all c. 185 by 140mm. Dated on the verso, 7 December,  Kitchener stares unblinkingly at the camera in familiar heroic pose. This photo- graph is dated only three months after Kitchener?s great victory at Omdurman of 2 September 1898, when his Anglo-Egyptian army avenged Gordon by crushing the forces of the Khalifa Abdulla, the Mahdi?s successor, and recon- quering the Sudan. Two days after the battle, on 4 September, he was able to fulfil his goal of raising the British flag over the ruins of Gordon?s palace in Khartoum. Shortly afterwards he was raised to the peerage as Baron Kitchener of Khartoum, so this must be one of the first photographs he signed using his title. He remained in the Sudan for a year as Governor General, and then was posted to South Africa on the outbreak of the Boer War as chief-of-staff to Lord Roberts.…
