With the advent of highly industrialised technology during the 20th century conflict has been on a steady increase as there are often dialectical processes involved between those creating technological innovations and those who become unwittingly involved in them. One environmental conflict called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking as it is commonly referred to, is a profitable industrial practice whereby natural gas is extracted from rock layers in the ground. Fracking is an environmental conflict arising from economic and political marginalisation based primarily on class divisions. This will be demonstrated first through describing fracking and how it is an environmental conflict, by explaining how fracking fits into a political and economic framework, and by finally outlining the cultural component, that is how marginalised socio-economic and ethnic groups are affected by the practice of fracking. Political ecology theory will be applied in order to gain an understanding of the complexities of fracking as this theory focuses on the mutual development of both political and ecological change. It is acknowledged that whilst applying a political ecology perspective is an effective anthropological method, it is also necessary to apply other anthropological theories in order to gain a more holistic analysis.

Humanistic theories offer an approach that both embraces and acknowledges the emotional aspects of the individual learning process. This essay argues that the relevance of humanism towards to the school system is significant, particularly when students begin to show signs of emotional behavioural disorders (EBD). Education from a humanistic perspective looks to implement methods to address the underlying causes that motivate students to act in ways that are both unhelpful to themselves and others in their immediate environment. This can be done through a variety of pedagogical strategies, borrowing on the theories of traditional humanists, such as Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow, to more modern approaches such as Non-Violent Communication. An outline of some of the pertinent theories and techniques in the humanist approach will be given, alongside their applicability in a New Zealand school context with students who show signs of EBD. Incorporating a culturally-aware approach will also be demonstrated to hold significant value, with relevance to those of both Maori and European heritage. It is concluded that empathetic educational practices provide students and teachers with opportunities to grow and learn together in a symbiotic environment.

This date coincided with the beginning of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which would allow for the removal of tariffs and the opportunity for American corporations to buy large sections of land across Mexico. The potential impact of this agreement meant that local farmers and indigenous communities would have to compete with new 'cash crops' and this would have a direct impact on the traditional farming of Mexico's most important staple food maize. The aim of this essay is to explore how maize is connected to the production and reproduction of national identity in Mexico, specifically how this is reproduced in the local area of Chiapas, and its influence on the Chiapas uprising. Through first outlining the theories of Bourdieu and then applying these to the situation in Chiapas, it will be shown that maize is directly tied to national identity and that national identity is closely linked to both class and ethnic identities in the region of Chiapas. It is concluded that the effects of both class and ethnic division, in relation to maize production and consumption, played an important role in precipitating the Chiapas uprising and changing local identity.

By examining Estroff's (1981) Making it Crazy, a review will be presented that analyses Estroff's theoretical stance and how its application is both useful and a hindrance in understanding the complexities of psychiatric disorders. While Estroff incorporates interpretative anthropology, structural-functionalism, and various other anthropological, sociological, and psychological methods in her case study, her main theoretical stance that will be examined is an interpretative anthropological one. Through first providing a brief outline of Estroff's ethnography and a definition of interpretative anthropology, the way she explores her subject through various interpretive methods will be demonstrated with an analysis of its strengths and weaknesses. By applying an interpretive framework, Estroff is able to gain an in-depth understanding of the complexities of patient life. However if other anthropological theories had been integrated into the analysis a more holistic interpretation and conclusion would have been reached.

In accordance with the need for an ever-growing variety of treatment types - to attend to the different needs of individuals - there has been a steady evolution of relatively new theories for the treatment of psychological disorders. One that has found particular attention in the area of postmodern approaches is compassion-focused therapy. Although both approaches are beneficial in the treatment of psychological disorders, compassion-focused therapy may have an advantage over cognitive-behavioural therapy as it provides a more concrete unification between logical thought and feelings. This is mainly through its central application of giving compassion to the client as the foundational work to therapy. To illustrate this point, both theories will be outlined and then compared and contrasted around the theme of depression since this is a prevalent issue and one that is considered to be the domain of cognitive-behavioural treatment, with a demonstrative outcome of how the differences between the two approaches can play a significant role in successful treatment. Compassion-focused therapy has the potential to be therapeutically more effective in treating depression, providing the client is ready to accept going beyond challenging their logical thinking and behaviour; ready to allow compassion in their life, and to be aware of how to balance their physiological regulatory systems.

Through applying a sociological theory that looks to analyse the interaction and relationship between the environment and the people who inhabit it, it will be argued that the position one takes on hunting is a reflection of their ecological habitus on the macro-level and the desire to satisfy emotional needs on the individual level. By first outlining the historical context of hunting within in New Zealand, as well as defining the basic concepts of ecological habitus, it will be demonstrated that hunting attitudes are influenced by identification with a national 'kiwi' identity, one's environmental location and type of capital possessed. Furthermore, it will be shown that those who choose to hunt can be categorised into three general groups, with all displaying similar underlying themes. In applying the theoretical ideas of ecological habitus and feminist psychoanalytical theory, a more complex understanding is gained on the various external and internal influences that direct people's behaviours and belief systems around hunting. Relational processes between people and their environments, alongside repressed emotional states, are also shown to play an integral part in the decision to hunt.

From the African slave trade across the Atlantic, where it was given as a primary means of sustenance in the form of paste, its use as an introduced crop of control by colonial settlers, to its modern day use as animal feed and food aid, maize has a rich history in power relations, especially in traditional third world countries. This essay will identify and explore the way that maize is linked to power within its local commodity chain in the country of Bhutan - that is, among the vast majority of the peasantry who utilise maize as a primary subsistence food. Through outlining Bhutan's general maize statistics and demonstrating the key forces behind the power relations of maize throughout Bhutan, it will be concluded that power lies primarily in the political and religious conditions of the country on the macro level and the social conditions of the family unit on the micro level. Furthermore, it will be shown that the religious and political conditions directly contribute to how power is manifested and utilised in the family with regards to maize production, exchange, and consumption.

The question of whether applying these theoretical approaches to practice is necessary, and to what degree, is a contented issue amongst counsellors, with responses depending heavily on which theoretical model of counselling is being utilised. In this essay it will be argued that theory is necessary to establish an effective counselling practice, only to the degree in which the chosen style of therapy used actually incorporates theory into its practice. Relatively speaking, this is meant that theory is only necessary for an effective counselling practice when the practitioner, and their theoretical position, both consider it to be so. This will be shown by first giving a general definition of counselling - both in relation to theory and practice, outlining some of the major counselling theoretical positions, and then demonstrating how each of these positions places emphasis on theory in relation to practice. It is concluded that applied theory is necessary within a counselling practice, with the degree of importance directly relating to which theory is used and the cultural values present where it is practiced.

As a result of pharmaceutical companies evolving more active and sometimes insidious roles within medicine, the organisation of power has shifted from being a relatively equal process between physicians and patients, to one that is now dominated by both medical professionals and pharmaceutical companies. Clinical Drug Trials (CDTs) represent a succinct example of how the biomedical system is inherently structured to maintain power imbalances between medical professionals and patients, with these imbalances manifesting on a socio-cultural and political level. By outlining a brief historical background of the medical movement from the 18th century to modern times and my experience of being a patient in CDTs, I will link my own perceptions and experiences of CDTs to the theories of Foucault and demonstrate how uneven power relations are heavily influenced by concepts of truth, language, and perception. The significance of Foucault's theories on understanding the various forms and complexities of power within CDTs are shown to be valuable when applying an anthropological framework.

This essay will examine ADHD in relation to a New Zealand context. First, an outline of ADHD will be given that includes its prevalence, etiology, and presenting behaviours. Predominant diagnostic methods will be explained alongside typical treatment methodologies. A discussion will then follow on the political and cultural influences that dictate ideological trends of thinking on ADHD. It is concluded that while individual choice determines the type of analysis and treatment used by teachers and medical professionals on a micro level, subsequent political and cultural conditions dictate the overall accepted knowledge surrounding ADHD on a macro level.

This will be done by outlining a general definition of class in relation to Marxist ideology and then applying this viewpoint to the historical development of PNG in relation to capitalism and class formation. It will show the major influence that the middle class had in the promotion of class identity, particularly normalising class differences. The essay ends with a reflection on middle class values in PNG and how they influence, but are nevertheless, part of the adaptive nature of capitalism. It is concluded that from a Marxist perspective, understanding class formation in PNG is tantamount to understanding class theory in general.

Because of the wide range of theoretical and practical approaches existing in the field, there is an ever-present need to critically analyse counselling's role in society, in conjunction with the evidence to support it. This essay will explore the scientific evidence surrounding counselling in New Zealand and analyse the significance, in terms of efficiency and effectiveness, that counselling has on individuals at the psychological and emotional level. This will be done by first giving a definition of counselling alongside pointing out the differences that make it distinct from other helping professions. Second, the nature and purpose of counselling will be outlined, alongside its intention and the prerequisites needed to facilitate interpersonal connection. Last, the value of counselling will be demonstrated by giving an analysis of the issues facing validation and then illustrating studies at both the international and national level to demonstrate clinical efficiency. It is concluded that the link between evidence-based research and counselling is one that requires stronger emphasis and through developing more counselling orientated research projects, a greater value will able to be placed on the role of counselling role within New Zealand culture.
