Illustrated with chromolithograph illuminated extra title page and first page of text. All edges gilt. Text printed single column in black and red with a red single rule border. Xxvii, [28-31], 32 - 220; 20 pp. Light rubbing to leather at spine joints and over raised bands. Contents clean, snug and neat. VG.

Stamped.Provenance: Purkiss and Imray families, London 19th century. Both families operated in the intense, competitive, and expanding print market of 19th century London, catering to different, yet essential, markets. In the 19th century, the Purkiss and Imray families were prominent in London, particularly within the fields of nautical publishing and intellectual property. Collection of deeds, documents business correspondence, photographs, relating to the Purkiss (of Glass House Yard, Aldersgate), Imray (Mulgrave Villa, Sutton & elsewhere) & associated families, mostly relating to property transactions in London (Fountain Place, City Road), wills etc., manuscripts, many deeds on vellum, letters on paper, folds, v.s., v.d., 1793-1914.

Engraved map, 24.3 x 39.5 cms; 26.9 x 44.2 cms (sheet), relief indicated with hachures, original folds, numbered in ink "27" in top corner (faded), minor edge-toning otherwise in very good condition. An uncommon Arrowsmith map of Central Asia "From Du Halde, D'Anville, Islenieff &c. &c. but Imperfect and inaccurate authorities", published before the Great Game. The map extends from the Caspian Sea in the west, to Manchura in the east; and from "Kolhyvan" (Western Siberia) in the north to Tibet in the South. It charts a region then largely mysterious to Western cartographers and a frontier for geopolitical ambitions: a caption north of the Kailash range reads "Unknown parts of Greater Tibet".
