George and his wife Jean's names penned in Jean's hand on the front fly as well. George Houser helped found, in 1953, the American Committee on Africa (ACOA); from 1955-1981, he served as Executive Director of the ACOA and he also was Executive Director of The Africa Fund from 1966-1981. "At ACOA he spearheaded numerous campaigns supporting African struggles for liberation and independence. Since 1954 he. made over 30 trips to Africa.
