Volume 2 contains abstracts from Gibbon's reading, with his reflections on what he read, and extracts from his journal (sometimes in French, with a parallel translation), short pieces on various aspects of Roman history, an outline of his planned history of the world from the ninth to the end of the fifteenth century, literary criticism, a history of the House of Brunswick (ancestors of the Hanoverian British royal family), and a riposte to a criticism of his own great work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, which is also reissued (in the 1896-1900 edition by J. B. Bury) in the Cambridge Library Collection.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - On the death of Edward Gibbon (1737-94), his unpublished papers were left to his friend John Baker Holroyd, first earl of Sheffield, who published them in two volumes in 1796. Gibbon had written six manuscript accounts of his own life, and, according to Sheffield, had always intended to publish his autobiography in his lifetime. The memoir as edited by Sheffield begins with Gibbon's family history, and taking in his education, travels, and career as a historian, finishes with his anxiety over the future of Europe in 1788. Sheffield then continues the story until Gibbon's death through his correspondence, providing a linking narrative, and this, together with 210 other letters to and from Gibbon, takes up Volume 1. His great work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, is also reissued (in the 1896-1900 edition by J. B. Bury) in the Cambridge Library Collection.

Having served in the Army, he entered the House of Commons in 1780. In 1803 he was appointed President of the Board of Agriculture. He was a great authority on farming and a leading economic authority of his time. In 1792, "A brief examination of Lord Sheffield's observations on the commerce of the United States", by Tench Coxe, was published as a reaction to Holroyd's book. B-1.

Together with a photocopy of the relevant page from the Gentleman's Magazine for September, 1805, containing the epitaph and Free's introductory note. Holroyd, John Baker, 1st Earl of Sheffield, 1735-1821, was a close friend and literary executor of Edward Gibbon, whose unpublished papers he published in two volumes in 1796. Beckwith Dodwell Free (born 1762), Student of Law at St John's College, Oxford, matriculated 1778, and was later a member of Lincoln's Inn. First edition, 8vo, iv, [3]-60 pp., stitched as issued, uncut and unopened, small stain on inner blank margin of title, a nice copy. In this work the author strongly condemns the present management of the poor as a disgrace to the policy and political economy of the poor. He alleged that the heavy burden of the poor rate had so ruined small tradesmen as to have added to, rather than reduced the existing number of paupers. He advocated the abandonment of the whole system; the separation and classification of paupers, the education of pauper children, and their separation from criminal parents. He suggested the application of the unemployed to agricultural work. Holroyd, an intimate friend of Gibbon, wrote numerous pamphlets on economic subjects, including commerce, manufacturers, slavery and the Corn Laws. Lord Sheffield, Baker, John Holroyd (1735 - 1821 ) was born in Yorkshire, statesman and friend of Edward Gibbon. He was created earl of Sheffield and Viscount Penensey in peerage of Ireland,1816 ; British peer, 1802 ; privy councillor, 1809 ; lord of Board of Trade, 1809. A detailed exposition and statistical comparison of the imports and exports of Great Britain and the United States, from 1700 to 1783. With each edition, Sheffield substantially revised and enlarged the text. Written in opposition to the bill introduced by Pitt in 1783, proposing to relax the navigation laws in favour of the States, the work was influential in determining the abandonment of the motion. Sheffield points up the weak position of America and continually stresses the growing commercial importance and potential of the West Indies and Canada (especially Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, particularly with regard to fisheries, lumber, and ship-building).
