While the earliest 1858 issues were published without illustrations, these early illustrated printings introduced engraved plates now generally attributed to Granville Perkins and Augustus Hoppin, enhancing Holmes's celebrated blend of philosophy, humor, poetry, and social observation. The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table is the first and most famous of Holmes's "Breakfast-Table" series and includes two of his best-known poems, "The Deacon's Masterpiece; or, The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay" and "The Chambered Nautilus."
