Erstausgabe
Hardcover, cloth. Zustand: Very Good-. No Jacket. Perkins, Granville; Duplessis (illustrator). Illustrated Edition. FIRST Illustrated Edition. Publisher's original brown pebbled cloth, Boston: Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1858. Early illustrated issue, with engraved plates. Some shelf wear with bumped corners; spine crown and heel with fraying and small tears; rear board with mottling and age toning. Binding sound. Clean, unmarked pages throughout. No dust jacket as issued. Collector's Note: This early illustrated issue of The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table is prized among collectors for its superior mid-19th-century production and its association with Boston's literary culture of the period. While the earliest 1858 issues were published without illustrations, these early illustrated printings introduced engraved plates now generally attributed to Granville Perkins and Augustus Hoppin, enhancing Holmes's celebrated blend of philosophy, humor, poetry, and social observation. The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table is the first and most famous of Holmes's "Breakfast-Table" series and includes two of his best-known poems, "The Deacon's Masterpiece; or, The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay" and "The Chambered Nautilus." Illustrated issues from this period remain significantly scarcer on the market than standard later printings, particularly in sound original cloth with the full complement of plates intact. Additional pictures are gladly provided on request. Book will be carefully wrapped and boxed securely for safe handling during transit, with international shipping available.
