Princeton University Press, Princeton / Oxford, 2010. XXIII,355p. Paperback. Like new. Appears unread. ?Brooke Holmes?s present book is particularly innovative because (?) it focuses on the body and not on the soul. Her thesis is twofold. First, she argues that the concept of the ?physical body? is not a given, but, rather, that… it arose -became visible- over a period of time. Second, she suggests that what we call ?symptoms?, defined as ?a disruption- without obvious cause and ofte, though not always, painful- either to the experience of self or to the outward presentation of self? (p.2), play an important part in this emergence of the physical body. (?) Holmes follows the emergence of the physical body in six chapters that bring us from Homer to Euripides. (?) Holmes has produced an important book proving that the notion of ?physical body? has a history, in the same ways as the notion of ?soul? She shows that, at the end of the archaic period and in the classical period, the body progressively came to be ?seen? as a physical, impersonal thing, an an object of knowledge and control. In order to do so, she has examined an amazingly large number of ancient sources; epic poems, philosophical fragments, orations, medical texts, and tragedies. (.) Her method is truly interdisciplinary. Borrowing as it does from philosophy, history of medicine, literary criticism, and anthropology. Holmes also provides her own excellent translations from the Greek, and she writes beautifully - each sentence is carefully crafted. Reading ?The Symptom and the Subject? is hard work because of its density, but also because Holmes?s descriptions of suffering can be incredibly moving. (?) It will no doubt become a point of reference for anyone interested in the body in the ancient world.? (LAURENCE TOTELIN in Isis, 2011, pp.551-552).
