Large octavo, vii, 276pp. Finely bound with marbled paper covered boards. Five raised bands, title in gilt on leather spine. No additional printings listed. Solid text block, bumped corners, occasional foxing, a near fine example. Features numerous facsimile plates of notable rare works and specialty bindings.

Zustand: Fine. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original vivid blue cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 10'' x 7''. Contains [xxvi] 215 pp with monochrome photographic plates throughout. Following his retirement from trade in 1892, Holme founded The Studio: an illustrated magazine of fine and applied art, a magazine dedicated to fine arts and decorative arts, giving roughly equal weight to each. The first issue appeared in April 1893. The first serving editor was Joseph Gleeson White (Lewis Hind had acted as editor for four months before the launch of the magazine). In 1895 Holme took over as editor himself, although Gleeson White continued to contribute. Holme retired as editor in 1919 for reasons of health, and was succeeded by his son Charles Geoffrey Holme, who was already the editor of special numbers and year-books of the magazine. Hardback. 30 x 21cm. Hardcover in ex-library buckram, 254pp. Bound without the original covers, but includes the two rare large fold-out plates: Robert W. Macbeth's 'Weed-burners in the Fens', and 'Joan Of Arc's Entry Into New Orleans' by Aubrey Beardsley (after C. Hentschel). The latter plate has apparently had a three inch closed tear at at some stage, but both plates have been rebacked onto durable linen, presumably by the library. Unobtrusive early 20th century library stamp for Nottingham Free Public Libraries recurring intermittently throughout. The volume was later accessioned by Sotheby's Educational Services, whose bookplate appears on the front pastedown. Pages 170-184 dampstained. Page 225/6 has torn corner with some loss, and page 227/8 has closed tear. Otherwise a tight, solid, and externally presentable copy of the first volume of this influential Art Nouveau journal, retaining both the seldom-seen unwieldy fold-out art plates.

Original Wraps. Zustand: Very Good. In eight parts complete. Folio measuring 31cm x 43cm. Publisher's quarter cream-coloured cloth over boards with paper title onlay to front board. With 48 plates, eight original parts loose within original portfolio boards. Boards worn and slightly marked, with loss to the top board's top-right corner. Each part in grey printed paper wrappers and containing an introduction on a particular medium (including wood-engraving, lithography, water-colouring, etc.) followed by six tipped-in plates. Plates include original etchings and engravings and reproductions of water-colours and oils. Gray paper wrappings have some wear to edges, but are internally clean. Illustrations including lithographs and etchings by Frank Brangwyn, Henri Riviere, A. Lepere, D. Y. Cameron. This is a heavy item and may require additional postage if being shipped outside of Europe. Folio.

Well illustrated survey of the art of bookbinding at the turn of the century. Particularly French and British bindings are described, this at the height of the Art Nouveau vogue.
