The Introduction starts out "With the first of a selection of famous painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, we enter the golden age of Renaissance painting in Italy. Bryan Holme (1913-1990) was an American author and publisher who founded Studio Books, a subsidiary of Viking Press. He also published The Studio, a London-based art magazine. Harry B. Wehle (1887 -1969) was Curator of European Painting, Metropolitan Museum of Art. As an undergraduate Wehle took the famous âMuseum Course" lead by Paul J. Sachs, He graduated from Harvard in 1911. He was appointed curator in 1918. Under his tenure, the collections of Bache, Griggs, Havemeyer and Lewisohn came to the Met. He retired in 1948, , but retained the title curator of collections.
