Holmboe exposes the maltreatment of the population he had witnessed on his journey and the atrocities committed by the Italian colonial power. This account is especially valuable for its description of the concentration camps into which Italian colonial powers forced Bedouin Arabs and where torture, humiliation, and famine were rife. Holmboe was murdered on his way to Makkah in Aqaba in October 1931. Some suspect that Italian intelligence officials, connected to the regime of Benito Mussolini, conspired in his death. Journaliste, explorateur et écrivain danois, Knud Holmboe (1902-1931) se convertit à l'islam en Afrique du Nord et voyage principalement au Maroc afin d'apprendre l'arabe et approfondir ses connaissances religieuses. En 1931, il entame un long voyage d'étude en Lybie, alors colonie italienne, qui lui inspire "Desert Encounter" aussitôt interdit dans l'Italie fasciste qui le juge trop critique à l'égard de sa politique en Libye. En 1931, il meurt assassiné à Aqaba, en Jordanie, dans des circonstances obscures sans que personne découvre le coupable, ni son corps jamais retrouvé.
