The Royal connection / The Pavilion / .whilst the section entitled 'The Steine' deals with the area immediately surrounding the pavilion from the time it was used to dry the local fishermen's nets to its formal setting with statues, fountains and ornamental gardens. In the sections on 'The Front' and 'The Beach and Bathing' we see the early development of the seaside aspect of the town whilst 'Piers and Pastimes' brings us closer to the familiar view of Brighton as a popular resort. 'Public Buildings and Pursuits' shows the social life of the town itself and ranges from churches to the racecourse and includes the theatres, schools, and other institutions. `The Railways' marks the transition from the days of a select resort for the few, to the concept of Brighton as a national seaside institution and contrasts with the next section 'Views and Visits' which recaptures the pastimes of an earlier age before the town became accessible to all. / Bills and Business.
