Catel); a good clean copy in contemporary calf (rather worn, but stoutly rebacked). First edition in English: a blank verse translation by Thomas Holcroft, whose fifty pages of preface and notes suggest that he took liberties with Goethe's original. The book was printed by Biggs and Cottle in Bristol, and the advertisements at the end are all for works by their stable of writers, all published by them in Bristol or printed for Longmans of London. These include several works by Southey, then three by the Cottle brothers (Joseph and his elder brother Amos Simon), followed by the two volumes of Lyrical Ballads in its 1800 edition (each given a separate entry), the poems of Mary Robinson and finally the second edition of the poems of Coleridge, which was the first to include those of Lamb and Lloyd, which had appeared in 1797.
