Moderately worn boards with a few minor nicks and scuffs. Heat damaged spine. Moderate rubbing to extremities. Corners lightly bumped. Light toning and moderate foxing to interior, offsetting to margins of endleaves. $150. * Third Edition, Greatly Enlarged and Revised Throughout from the Last English Edition. This treatise was first published in London in 1834 by English barrister John William Smith and went through several English and American editions and issues. It became a standard reference work on commercial law in both England and America and saw numerous editions throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. The American editors were: James P. Holcombe, a law professor at the University of Virginia and a legal author, Holcombe was a Confederate politician and diplomat during the American Civil War and William Y. Gholson, a lawyer and judge who practiced law in Ohio and later served on the Ohio Supreme Court. This 1861 edition, was published in New York during the Civil War, and was "greatly enlarged and revised" to reflect American legal practices, incorporating significant annotations to adapt the English source material for the U.S. legal system. The editors' affiliations with different sides of the war (Holcombe, a Confederate; Gholson, an anti-slavery advocate) highlight the complex political climate in which the work was published. Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 2447. New York: Appleton & Co., 1861, 3rd edition. (illustrator).

Light toning and foxing to interior, upper-outside corners lacking from two leaves with no loss to text, illegible inkstamp to rear free endpaper. $450. * Only edition. First published in 1836, Story's Commentaries on Equity Jurisprudence was a standard work in America and Great Britain for most of the nineteenth century. (The final American edition, the 13th, was published in 1886; the final British edition, the second, in 1892.) A remarkably comprehensive work, it was also a serious challenge for the reader, comprising two thick volumes of dense text. Holcomb's Introduction is an accessible companion to Story's treatise that provides a summary of the work with original explanatory notes and citations from other American authorities on equity. Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 4971. New York & Cincinnati, 1846. (illustrator).
