It is the first study to place fashion photography in the main stream of popular culture. The book links fashion to the photography of such influential figures as Walker Evans and Robert Frank. Fashion photography is about much more than fashion, and its implications transcend a purely photographic history. Martin Harrison explores the role of magazine culture and the influences of the great art directors and editors, who have both created and reflected the mood and tones of the post-war decades. With the participation of the greatest figures in the field, from Richard Avedon and Irving Penn to Bruce Weber, he presents some of the most famous fashion photographs of all time as well as many rare and long-lost images. The book's conclusion, at the start of the Nineties, is that the form of fashion photography is losing its distinction from the lineage of photography itself. The final chapter examines the participation of artists such as Cindy Sherman or Robert Mapplethorpe, whose work is peripheral to the fashion industry, yet whose influence pervades the look and climate of the times. MARTIN HARRISON is an art historian and exhibition curator. His books include studies of English Stained Glass, on which he is a leading authority, and several books on photography. In 1985 he researched and wrote the catalogue for Shots of Style, a major exhibition of fashion photography at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. He was formerly the Director of the Olympus Gallery in London and he worked at the Vogue Studios in London, where he assisted many of the greatest fashion photographers.
