In den WarenkorbFirst Edition. First edition to include Grey's annotations and preface. Two octavo volumes. Nineteenth-century red straight-grained morocco; gilt titling and rules; xxxvi, [42], 424pp; 446, [24]pp. Frontispiece portrait of Butler to v.I; 16 inserted leaves of engraved plates (several folding) after Hogarth, as called for. Straig…ht and tight in an attractive 19th-century binding. A few brief contemporary marginal comments in an unknown hand; dampstaining to base of both spines extending to bottom margin and gutter of first and final dozen leaves of each volume; otherwise a very clean and sound set. Includes the substantial subscriber list; Samuel Johnson is listed among the subscribers. This edition of Hudibras was not without controversy. Grey, whose knowledge of Butler's era was reputedly unexcelled, provided lengthy annotations elucidating Butler's satirical jabs at his contemporaries. A brief pamphlet war ensued, in which Grey defended his work and attacked his detractors. The plates by Hogarth are excellent, and well-enough printed that Brunet commented upon their quality: ESTC T2679. LOWNDES 355. BRUNET I,1427-28.
