Egbert Forsten, Groningen, 1990. 166p. Paperback. G.A.A. (ALAIN BILLAULT in Revue des Études Grecques, 1991, pp.655-56).

Egbert Forsten, Groningen, 1988. 172p. Paperback. ?This collection consists of nine papers on the ancient novel and its ?Nachleben? from the 1986 colloquia at Groningen. (?) In many respects this little volume concerns itself with ambiguity: all touch on reader reaction in some way, many on reaction to that most tantalizing of texts, the ?Metamorphoses? While little emerges that is new, there is much responsible reformulation and incentive to further discussion. (?) The collection is attractively produces, and often conspicuously well documented. It offers an ambitious and enjoyable series of explorations to mark a new phase in the Groningen project?s work.? (GRAHAM ANDERSON in The Classical Review (New Series), 1990, pp.496-97).

Two papers deal with Greek novels -the Aesop Romance and Charitons Chaereas and Callirhoe- the remaining seven centre around the person of Apuleius and his Golden Ass. Like its predecessors, the present volume reflects the strong revival of interest by many scholars in the genre of the ancient novel, its narrative texture and its artistic and esthetic qualities.
