Minor mark to front board from production (glue showing through). With slipcase made by Mary Carrington, cream slub silk to slipcase boards. 4to (19.6 x 27cm). All edges deckled. Sage green handmade paper endpapers with inclusions. Slight starting at gutter after first blank endpage. Frontis. Printed throughout on all-rag handmade paper from the Papeterie Saint-Gilles. Printed from hand-set Libra type and wooden blocks with an 1882 Albion hand-press. Hand-sewn; 'this book was made by hand' (limitation page). Limited edition of 97 copies (the first 10 hors de commerce), of which this is no. 65. Calligraphic signature by Brender a Brandis, the 'bookwright'. Hand-coloured vignette to limitation page, and further hand-coloured vignette to p. 13. Profusely illustrated throughout with over 60 of Brender a Brandis' wood engraved illustrations of flowers from Shakespeare, several depicted in appropriate settings (the ruins of Kenilworth Castle; Anne Hathaway's cottage near Stratford upon Avon) likely based on sketches by Brender a Brandis during his preparatory visit to England as he researched this volume. Illustrations are accompanied throughout by quotations from Shakespeare, with text by Shakespeare scholar F. David Hoeniger giving cultural, historical, and botanical context for the images. Typesetting and layout are rhythmic, clear, and sometimes innovative, as in the split and tilted engraving for Ophelia's crow-flowers and deadnettles. The illustrations are botanically precise and densely intricate: 'Brender a Brandis' delicate illustrations evoke tremendous texture for a medium as difficult as wood engraving, and have a wild, almost Art Nouveau quality' (Toronto Globe and Mail, referring to the 2006 Porcupine Quill trade edition). Gerard Brender a Brandis (b. 1943) came to Canada with his family in 1947 and is now widely acknowledged as one of Canada's foremost contemporary printmakers. Working out of his home studio in Stratford, Ontario, he is known for his involvement in almost every aspect of the creation of his handmade books, from papermaking and spinning and weaving linen for bookcovers through to typesetting, printing, and bookbinding. A Gathering of Flowers from Shakespeare remains among his most significant and best-loved works. Extremely scarce in this original hand-press edition. ~Robust packaging. Overseas orders trackable on request. Size: 76pp. Binding sound, text unmarked.
