About the Book:- In this volume it is proposed to describe the ethnology of the tribes inhabiting the hills which in point of area form the greater part of the state of Manipur. The state lies between latitude 23°50' and 25°30 North longitude 93°10' and 94°30' East and Contain about 8,000 square miles of which 7,000 square miles are hill territory as opposed to the vallely territory and are inhabited by Naga and Kuki tribes, hill people, who number slightly more than 100,000, while accepting with due reserve the familiar distinction between Nagas and Kukis, it may be pointed out that the tribes commonly classed together as Naga and Kuki occupy definite areas in these hills. About the Author: Thomas Callan Hodson (18711953) was the first William Wyse Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge, where he was a Fellow of St Catharine's College, notable for his writings on Indian anthropology and for coining the term sociolinguistics. In Analysis of the 1931 Census of India (Government of India Press, 1937) Hodson analysed the physical types in India, in great detail, adopting the models dominant in his day. This analysis was independent of the castes, and Brahmins and Dalits were classified in the same "racial groups". For example, Telugu Brahmins and Chamars were classified as "Racial Element A". In total, he distinguished seven "racial elements", from A to G. Hodson used the classical "brachycephalic" and "dolichocephalic" terminology in force in racial discourses of the day. This was a typology constructed from the so-called "cephalic index" (the ratio of the maximum width of the head to its maximum length) and to classify human populations according to this purported scientific measure.
