Hodson pleaded not guilty to charges of making 'false and groundless complaints' after being refused entry to the regimental hospital, 'being kept in the dark' about hospital management and being wilfully disobedient in attending to a patient 'in direct opposition to his duty'. Despite a spirited defence, in essence that he was doing his duty as a surgeon in treating patients and that any errors he had made were due to youth and inexperience, he was found guilty by the court and dismissed the service.

First edition, first impression, presentation copy from Earl Mountbatten, inscribed on the half-title "To Elizabeth Collins a souvenir of our time in India and with best wishes for Xmas from Mountbatten of Burma 1969". The recipient was secretary to Edwina Mountbatten during the preparations for Indian and Pakistani independence. Hodson served as Constitutional Adviser to the Viceroy of India from 1941 to 1942. "His experiences in 1941-2 were a major factor in Lord Mountbatten's decision to ask him in 1963 to write a history of the transfer of power in the subcontinent and to offer him unfettered access to the enormous Mountbatten archive. The Great Divide was published six years later. It was an impressive book: lapidary, perceptive, dispassionate, and scrupulously fair" (ODNB). Octavo.
