The book has been signed (without dedication) by the illustrator to the title page. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover. The trade edition of this tiny book featuring Hockney's intricate etchings for the Grimm stories 'The Little Sea Hare', 'Fundevogel', 'Rapunzel', 'The Boy Who Left Home to Learn Fear', 'Old Rinkrank', and 'Rumpelstilzchen'. The 39 black and white plates present here, were first exhibited at the Kasmin Gallery in 1970 and published in four portfolio editions, reproduced here in miniature. First edition, with the errata sheet loose as issued; one of 450 copies only. Simultaneously an homage and riposte to Hogarth's moralizing series of the same name, A Rake's Progress was Hockney's first major print series, reproduced on a smaller scale here and juxtaposed with Posner's poem. While Hogarth's rake descends into ruin, Hockney's is faced with a crisis of identity, rather than morality. The series is viewed as a thinly veiled autobiographical account of Hockney's own experience of arriving in New York. Hockney began work on the original etchings in September 1961 and the set was published as an edition of 50 in 1963 by Editions Alecto. Hockney himself suggested Posner write the accompanying poem, designed to function as a stand-alone work in its own right, for this edition. Square folio. Illustrated with 16 reduced halftone letterpress blocks after etchings by Hockney. Original black cloth boards with slide-on plastic spine binder, front cover lettered in grey, illustrated endpapers, printed on Dual White Proven art paper. With original packing box.
