Three volumes (Part II of Volume II no present) of this woodblock printed medical treatise by Benjamin Hobson, ??? Volume 1 (67 pages), ?? ? Part 1 of Volume 2 (40 pages), and ??? Volume 3 (18 pages, plus 4 pages of index). From different Japanese editions as sizes and publishing details differ slightly, but are printed on folded leaves with Chinese text that includes Japanese katakana next to some characters. Numerous interesting black and white line illustrations. Volume III includes a table of contents in Chinese and English. Each volume is in four hole stab binding with patterned yellow paper wrappers, modern thread ties. Edges somewhat stained, as are wrappers, but text remains unaffected. Text in traditional Chinese characters. Volume 1 and 3, 25.5 x 17.2cm; Part 1 Volume 2, 25.9 x 17.7cm. ???? "The First Lines of The Practice of Surgery, In The West" by English missionary Benjamin Hobson (1816-1873) and his Chinese translator and assistant ??? [Guan Maocai] (also known as ??? [Guan Sifu]). The book covers a wide range of medical subjects, discussing various medical problems and their remedies. The second of the five medical textbooks in Chinese written by Hobson between 1881 and 1858, this is regarded as his best. According to Hobson himself in an article (1861) published in Medical Times & Gazette, he says "These five works were not translations of any one English work in particular but rather selections from many works on the same subject, adapted to use." However, Hobson did use Robert Druitt's "The Surgeon's Vade Mecum" as his main reference for this book. In the preparation for writing this book, Hobson was introduced by the Rev. J. Edkins to the Chinese scholar Guan who played a huge role in the publication of this work. At the time Guan met Hobson, Guan was a Nanking refugee from Taiping rebellion. Guan worked hard both as the translator and also to balance the ideas of Western and Chinese medicine in the book. This "balancing of the text" was not always happy, leading to some friction between author and translator, however Guan's elegant and immensely readable style meant that the book was widely read and appreciated. Confucian traditional education had included medical learning as part of the elite education from the Song dynasty onwards, so Guan, who was highly educated in the Confucian tradition, had a real understanding of the subject. With the purpose of establishing a solid foundation for Western medical study in China, Hobson's writing tended to over emphasise the advantage of Western medicine and surgical procedures over that of traditional Chinese medicine. He could be openly critical of Chinese medicine, stating for example in his article previously mentioned, "So between the ignorance of Physicians and the poor quality of the medicine administered, the sick in China stand but a poor chance of drawing much benefit on medical skills." ???? "The First Lines of The Practice of Surgery, In The West" had an unprecedented impact on the introduction of Western medicine in China and also was greatly appreciated in Korea and, most particularly, in Japan. The first Japanese edition was issued in 4 volumes and published in 1858. Interestingly, both Chinese and Japanese editions were reprinted rapidly. The policy of Renji hospital, the publisher of the Chinese edition, might have contributed to this situation, as the hospital "had a policy allowing anyone who wanted to read these books to make a copy from the original printing plates, which were stored in the hospital: if he carries his own paper and ink.the hospital will not charge a penny." Renji Hospital is today part of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Dr Benjamin Hobson's second wife was the only daughter of The Rev. Robert Morrison, the first Protestant missionary to China. (Journal of Chinese Studies No. 56 - January 2013; Chinese translation of English textbooks on internal medicine from the 1850s to the 1940s - Hong Chuang-Ye and Wang Fu-Mei).

Edo [To?kyo?] : Yorozuya Heishiro?, Ansei 5 [1858]. Four volumes (complete), original decorated Japanese Fukuro-toji binding with title labels, 25.6 x 17.5cm. 62, 48, 62, 22 leaves, woodcut illustrations of (sometimes graphic) surgical practices, previous owner?s stamps (in Japanese) on the wrapper of the first volume, and first & last pages on each volume, pale watermarks to the corners, text in Chinese, with some Japanese reading marks, title and contents pages in English and Chinese. The first Japanese edition of Benjamin Hobson's highly influential The first lines of the practice of surgery in the West, first published in Shanghai in 1857. Benjamin Hobson (1816-1873) was a Protestant medical missionary who arrived in Macao in 1859 and spent over twenty years practicing medicine in China, founding hospitals in Hong Kong, Canton and Shanghai. Fluent in Chinese, Hobson authored four books on Western medicine in the 1850s, each of which were entirely new works, not translations of previously published texts. In this work, Hobson, outlines the principles of the best practices in Western surgery, illustrated with details and sometimes gruesome woodcut illustrations of the maladies encountered by surgeons of the period. Hobson's works was immediately successful in China, Korea and Japan, and was quickly reprinted and used at the missionary medical schools and hospitals in East Asia. The fourth volume adds traditional Chinese medicines to the surgical practices, with illustrations of herbs and plants which can be used to treat illness. Dr Benjamin Hobson's first wife died while on a voyage to England in 1845. Hobson remarried Rebecca Morrison, the only daughter of famous missionary Robert Morrison, the first Protestant Missionary in China.

[Kyoto 1859, Tenkodo]. Yellow stitched stiff wrs., 2 vol. set, very clean, bright copy, 35+27 double-folded leaves, 41 fine woodcut engravings, 18 x 24. cm., title slips, obscure! FIRST EDITION . *** **** *** . . THIS IS ONE OF HOBSON'S MOST POPULAR ITEMS . . . CAREFULLY STUDIED BY THE CHINESE & JAPANESE . * An excellent example of a Western text brought to China, then to Japan. This work addresses midwifery and pediatrics. . There are stunning woodblock illustrations showing the states of fetal growth, sections of the pregnant uterus with views of the growing child. Various 'presentations' prior to birth of the fetus, and other anatomical views. . This work shows the female pelvis, with measurements from the sacrum to the uterus, and in the pelvic girdle for estimate of fetus size for birthing. . A very good look at the fallopian tubes, uterus, external female organs. Also excellent graphics of a fetus at 2 and 3 months in the uterus, presentation for birth with baby's head down, afterbirth, the progression of the baby down the birth canal, breech, and other presentations, difficult deliveries, twins, the top of the baby's head and the location of the bones. With a very good look at the circulation system. . * This work was based on an unnamed general English genealogical text imported to China by Hobson. It eventually it made its way to Japan. While in Canton, Hobson, worked in concert with a Chinese to translate this and several other works into Chinese. Hobson's Chinese name was written in this an all of his other works in Chinese characters. . The features of the baby are clearly [foreign] or English, rather than Asian, thus proving the original work was English or European. . *** THE WOODBLOCK ILLUSTRATIONS: . The fine detail of the illustrations were carefully copied from the original copper etchings, and converted into woodcut examples. The high-quality of these graphics are a tribute to the great skill of Japanese carvers. This excellent illustrated treatise gave Japanese physicians and medical students an early look at European gynecological reference sources. This can be considered an early resource for the Japanese to observe drawings taken from human cadavers. This shows in much fine detail, bones, muscles, ligaments & structures of the female pelvis area, as well as good view and cut-away views of the tissues. . The Japanese were isolated from the world until the 1850's when Perry opened Japan. Before that the Dutch provided the Japanese with rudimentary texts on anatomy and medicine, but these were all in Dutch, and the Japanese had to scramble for several years to learn enough Dutch to correctly read, translate and print Japanese language versions. . The Dutch occupied a small island [Deshima] in Nagasaki harbor where various physicians brought European medical text for Rangakusha [Japanese students of Dutch learning] which was the first insights to foreign medicine. . What sets this example apart, is that it was already translated into Chinese from English, which was a language the Japanese could read with care. This work is written in Kambun, an old form of Chinese which was understood by educated Japanese physicians. . * An excellent illustrated resource, with superbly carved woodcut examples in much detail. . *** WHO WAS BENJAMIN HOBSON [1816-1873]: .
