Publisher's mustard brown cloth with pictorial design in red, blue and black to cover and title letters in yellow bordered in black to cover and solid black t…o spine. Unusual binding detail find's "Harpers" in black lettering to base of spine but all publishing info in the book decidely that of the Russell 1st edition. Handsomely illustrated wqith 16 full page plates from block engravings, 7 in color. Frontis tissue guarded. Soundly bound and clean; gift inscription to front flyleaf, undated. Mild furring of cloth at spine ends and light rub at tips. Just mild shelf/handling soil to boards. One plate mid book had lossened and is I alittle furred at the front edge; we have reseated the plate. The poetry is often in vernacular, sometimes in that of a young child, sometimes in an approximation of Americanized german and some southern, African-American styled vernaculars. Subjects range from Christmas, to the Spanish American War and Roosevelt and the Rough Riders. Handsomely illustrated by Mars and Squire. VG to VG+ . In den WarenkorbVintage reference photograph from the 1923 film, showing actress Lillian Gish and three elderly nuns. Provenance stamp and annotations in manuscript ink and pencil on the verso. Based on the 1909 play by Frances Marion Crawford and Walter Hackett, based in turn on Crawford's 1909 novel, about a woman who joins a convent after le…arning that her sweetheart has been killed in an African expedition, only to later discover that he is still alive. The second of four adaptations of the play, following the 1915 silent film starring Viola Allen, and followed by a 1933 sound film and a 1960 Mexican film. The film also marked actor Ronald Colman's first major film role, paving the way for his long tenure as a leading man in Hollywood. Shot on location in Naples, Lago Montagna, and Rome, Italy, and in Algeria. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus.
