Tipped in color frontispiece. Illustrated with numerous line drawings, 100 striking color plates, and a folded map at rear, this work is one of the finest books on Caucasian rugs ever produced. In it, the author undertakes to deepen the knowledge and to locate the products of the various tribes and clans according to ethnological evidence and structural differences. He tries specifically to capture the beauty and artistic balance of old and antique rugs of Central Asia. The 100 color plates give the reader an idea of the treasures of past days as well as of stylistic development of rugs coming from a certain district. On eight pages, 52 various tribal "guls" are shown by which the provenance can be readily determined. Hans König gives a splendid survey of the historical and political background with attention to the way of life, religion and commercial aspects of this great territory which is flanked by high mountains and guarded by vast deserts. [No more issued] 'Similar reasoning led Field to regard codd. 22, 36, 48, 51, 62, 90, 93, 144, 147, 233, 308 as presenting a more or less Lucianic text in the Prophets. Meanwhile, Lagarde had independently reached nearly the same result, so far as regards the historical books. He satisfied himself that codd. 19, 82, 93, 108, 118 [his h, f, m, d, p], had sprung from a common archetype, the text of which was practically identical with that of the LXX. as quoted by Chrysostom, i.e., with the Antiochian text of the fourth century, which presumably was Lucianic. Lagarde proceeded to construct from these and other sources a provisional text of Lucian, but his lamented death intercepted the work, and only the first volume of his Lucianic LXX. has appeared (Genesis-2 Esdr., Esther).'
