Synopsis: The study reported in this volume adds to the growing body of evaluation studies that focus on the use of NSF-funded Standards-based high school mathematics curricula. Most previous evaluations have studied the impact of field-test versions of a curriculum. Since these innovative curricula were so new at the time of many of these studies, students and teachers were relative novices in their use. These earlier studies were mainly one year or less in duration. Students in the comparison groups were typically from schools in which some classes used a Standards-based curriculum and other classes used a conventional curriculum, rather than using the Standards-based curriculum with all students as curriculum developers intended.

This state of affairs creates numerous problems, not the least of which is that the Persians, heirs of the millennia-old traditions of Mesopotamia and possessors of an Iranian cultural heritage great in its own right, are seen largely through the eyes of an alien people who did not fully understand them. Modern students, operating under the influence of the panhellenic, antibarbarian polemics of Isocrates, frequently assume that Greeks of the later classical period uniformly regarded the Persian barbarians with contempt. However, there are a number of reasons for doubting the truth of this. Hirschs book is a study in attitudesGreek perceptions of the Persians during the Classical era as revealed primarily through the writings of Xenophon. A fourth century Athenian aristocrat, soldier, and farmer, Xenophon traveled widely in the Persian Empire and gave considerable attention to the area in several of his books. His attitudes toward Persia are complex but also balanced and often positive, and they fill a crucial place in a continuum of respectful Greek attitudes toward Persia stretching back in time to Aeschylus and Herodotus in the fifth century and forward to the seemingly enlightened ideas of Alexander the Great. - Steven W. Hirsch is Assistant Professor of Classics at Tufts University.
