Saints, as dilettantes with special vocation and instructions, interfere in particular fields with actual professionals. Apart of that, they intervene with general instructions and demands in the lives of all members of their community: In relation to the supernatural with the medicine man, shamans, concerning the divine with the priests and religious scholars, socially and politically with those in power, politicians and military. In any case the wonder is the regular confirmation of their charisma and instructions. The saint can act here either as a simple mediator but also as a medium in a broader sense. The contributions discuss how the biographical material is constantly revised to keep its role in creating and maintaining a historico-cultural identity. The sources to be investigated were not restricted to written ones, but also include pieces of oral tradition and fine arts. Bien que lorsque l'on évoque la notion de sainteté dans les sociétés africaines, on pense immédiatement aux religions monothéistes, il sera question ici de toute personne qui entretient des relations particulières de médiateur avec la sphère du divin. Le saint comme dilettante, avec une vocation et une mission particulière, interfère avec certains groupes sociaux et leurs représentants - en général il intervient avec une visée et une vocation globale dans la vie de tous les membres de la communauté -: dans le domaine du surnaturel, le saint interfère avec les guérisseurs, les chamans; dans le domaine du divin avec les prêtres et les religieux lettrés; dans le champ social et politique avec les dirigeants, les hommes politiques et les militaires. Son charisme et sa mission sont validés dans tous les cas par le miracle. Il peut être un simple intermédiaire ou bien aussi un médium aus sens plus large. C'est donc le rôle que le saint joue dans la construction d'une identité historico-culturelle qui sera discuté, dans la succession des matériaux biographiques continuellement retouchés. Les sources questionnées ne se limitent pas au domaine de l'écrit mais s'ouvrent également sur la tradition orale et les représentations iconographiques.
