Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. A complete set of "Oeuvres anonymes du XVIII siècle" (I,II,III,IV) from the seven part 'L'Enfer de la Bibliothèque nationale' series. These hefty and richly illustrated tomes explore the anonymous erotic and pornographic 18th century books and manuscripts held in the 'Enfer' department of the BNF in Paris. Because of their rarity and value, the works in situ may be seen only with authorization, adding to the importance of this series which reproduces scarcely seen material, much of which remains untranslated and unpublished. All four volumes are generally in very good condition, minor reading creases do not effect the integrity of the binding, which is solid and square throughout. Covers are lightly discolored, most apparent in vol. III which also has some light tears to the plastic along the bottom edge of the covers. Pages lightly age toned throughout, particularly in Vol II which is a slightly darker tone. Volume I has a number of pencil marks and notes in the margins, though the rest are unmarked. Volume I focuses on the 'Histoire de Dom Bougre Portier de Chartreux', one of the most celebrated erotic novels of the century, here united with two relatively unknown works of the period. General introduction by Michel Camus, and prefaces by Hubert Juan, and Jean-Pierre Dubost. Volume II reproduces four titles around the theme of Libertinage and courtesans, with prefaces by Michel Delon and Charles Hirsch. Volume III contains six titles including 'Therese philosophe' and a selection of anticlerical erotic literature, with prefaces by Philippe Roger, Jean-Marie Goylemot, and Charles Hirsch. Volume IV contains unpublished erotic works, with an introduction by artist and writer Pierre Bettencourt, and prefaces by Jean-Pierre Dubost, Antoine de Baecque, Chantal Thomas and Michel Camus. All four books are in excellent condition overall, providing a comprehensive overview to this scarce and fascinating material.
