Zustand: Nuevo.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition hard back binding in publisher's original grey cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 9'' x 5½''. Contains [xxviii] 272 printed pages of text. This is a most important new work on Emperor Hirohito by one of Japan's leading historians, Ikuhiko Hata. Following the untimely death of Marius B. Jansen (Emeritus Professor, University of Princeton) in December 2000, who had been actively collaborating with the author and translator of the original Japanese edition ("Hirohito Tenno itsutsu no ketsudan", first published in 1987 and republished in 1994), it was inevitable that there would be a delay in publication of the English edition, which is finally now available. In his extended Foreword as editor, referring to the nature of Hirohito's power, Jansen states: 'We are left with puzzles that will probably never be resolved. Clearly, as Professor Hata and others have shown, the Emperor Hirohito had immense power, but the condition of retaining it was judicious restraint in exercising it'. In offering a view on the merits of Hata's research, Jansen points to the hitherto unknown plots (in parallel but unrelated) by both the Army and Navy to preserve, and if necessary resuscitate, the imperial line in the event the victors decided to depose Hirohito. Jansen also points to the merits of Hata's particular focus on the contribution Hirohito made to Japan in its post-war relations with the United States. Jansen added substantive notes to help place the author's material in historical and historiographical perspective. The book, which is not a biography or a general history of the Showa era, focuses on five decisions taken by Emperor Hirohito, which the author considers the key turning points of his reign: these concern the 26 February 1936 insurrection of young army officers, the termination of the Pacific War, the post-war constitution, the issue of abdication and the San Francisco Peace Treaty. Fine condition book in Fine condition dust wrapper, unused and unopened new book. We carry this book in stock for immediate dispatch. Member of the P.B.F.A. In den Warenkorb8vo (ca. 120 x 174 mm). 69 entries on 71 ff. Contemporary boards covered with green coloured paper. An important and highly interesting Italian friendship album assembled between July 1919 and June 1924, realized in Klecksography throughout, by folding in half the signatures while still damp to create symmetrical ink blots, similar to the one used for the Rorschach test. - Among the personalities here represented is Emperor Hirohito, who visited Italy accompanied by his uncle, Prince Kanin Kotohito, during a six-month state visit to Europe before assuming the regency of Japan in November 1921. The album also contains also a series of signatures collected in Fiume (Rijeka) in August 1920, at the height of the Italian Regency of Carnaro, including Gabriele D'Annunzio himself as well as Sante Ceccherini, Viganò, the commander of the defected destroyer Espero, and other legionaries and military heroes. The collection further comprises members of the Italian royal family, represented almost in its entirety, and the ministers of Mussolini's first government, including Costanzo Ciano, Armando Diaz and Giovanni Gentile. - Light marginal dampstaining. Spine and binding professionally restored. Full list of contributors is available upon request.

The Taisho era's end and the Showa era's beginning were proclaimed. In November 1928, the Emperor's ascension was confirmed in ceremonies which are conventionally identified as 'enthronement' and 'coronation'; but this formal event would have been more accurately described as a public confirmation that his Imperial Majesty possesses the Japanese Imperial Regalia, also called the Three Sacred Treasures, which have been handed down through the centuries. At the start of his reign, the Empire of Japan was the ninth largest economy in the world, the third-largest naval power, and one of the four permanent members of the council of the League of Nations. He was the head of state under the Meiji Constitution during Japan's imperial expansion, militarization, and involvement in World War II. After Japan's surrender, he was not prosecuted for war crimes as many other leading government figures were. His degree of involvement in wartime decisions remains controversial. During the post-war period, he became the symbol of the state of Japan under the post-war constitution and Japan's recovery. By the end of his reign, Japan had emerged as the world's second-largest economy. . .(see Wikipedia).
