Hard back binding in publisher's original floral decorated dark olive cloth covers, gilt title lettering to the upper panel, red tinted page edges, aqua green marine end leaves. 6¼'' x 5''. Chromolithograph illustrated borders with illuminated capitals to the biblical quotations to top and bottom of pages and a different flower or plant to each page. Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. A scarce, handsome and decorative diary from the Religious Tract Society, illustrated in colour. Includes Bible quotes, colour and gilt borders, and colour floral illustrations throughout, engraved and printed by Edmund Evans. With two pages per month, and blank pages for memoranda. The entries for January and February have been filled in with spiritual notes and phrases in pen and pencil. Bears W. H. Smith & Son's booksellers embossed stamp on the front free endpaper. The Religious Tract Society, founded 1799, 56 Paternoster Row and 65 St. Paul's Churchyard, was the original name of a major British publisher of Christian literature intended initially for evangelism, and including literature aimed at children, women, and the poor. "Edmund Evans (18261905), wood-engraver and printer, was a talented engraver in black and white, particularly of landscapes and flora and fauna, but made his name by exploiting a growing market for books with illustrations printed in colour" - ODNB. Little is known about J. H. Hipsley. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering and stamped decoration. The binding is tight and firm. The front inner hinge is somewhat strained after the front free endpaper, but still holding well enough. There is only slight wear to the extremities, with just some slight bumping, rubbing, and some slight marks to the boards. Internally the pages have very occasional spots and marks, with some very slight browning and offsetting. With contemporary notes to the first four pages. Very Good.
