In the 1920s, he was briefly married to Anna Mahler (Gustav Mahler's daughter) and worked as an assistant at theaters in Kassel and Wiesbaden. Due to his progressive music and the political upheavals, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1938 following the "Anschluss" of Austria, where he became a naturalized citizen in 1945. He taught at renowned institutions such as Vassar College and Hamline University.
