Two murders in London - one of a foreign sailor in the Monmouth Hotel, a Wapping pub and inn, and the other an American businessman in an East-End hotel - appear to be connected by the ornate hourglasses found at both scenes. Ronald Calshot, banker and protagonist, decides to investigate and is soon embroiled in the mystery. Francis Edward Grainger, 1857-1927, was a journalist and author of many popular adventure, detective, and spy stories.
