8vo. 19cm, Second Edition, with Additions,[vi],354,[13]pp., chapter head & tail pieces and decorated firstinitials, index, in contemporary full rebacked in tan calf, raised bands,contemporary hand-written spine title label, very good to fine condition(). ~ A history of England contemporary with the English Civil War and published first in 1724 - "The Author has lets these Papers lie cover'dwith Dust these 36 Years, till every Person concern'd was remov'd fromthe Stage.". (Author's preface). English historian, poet and JacobiteBevill Higgons(1670-1735) went into exile in France with James II. Hedevoted his life to literary pursuits after being incarcerated in 1695as a suspect in an attempted assassination of William III. The secondedition of this book was dated in 1734 and Higgons dedicated it to TheDuchess of Buckingham and Normandy. This copy has a hand-writtencontemporary (?) note: "This work was ordered by the English Parliamentto be burnt by the Hangman." Unfortunately no verification of this notehas been found.

Small 8vo, pp. iv, 19; title page quite badly stained (with ink and general dirt) at head, but without obscuring the text; some dampstains elsewhere; however otherwise a decent copy, disbound. Second edition: this poem was first published - as the title page confesses - in 1713, and is here republished with a new dedication to the original dedicatee's son. Edward Harley, second Earl of Oxford, was not cut out to be a politician and took no interest in his father's public affairs. He did, however, continue and enormously expand the great Harleian library begun by the first Earl, and made it into the finest private library of its time - perhaps, indeed, the finest ever formed in Britain. The new dedication, signed by the publisher, pays tribute to Oxford's 'delicate Taste' which 'makes you the most competent Judge' of the poem's merits. Higgons (1670-1736) was a Jacobite who had gone into exile in 1704, and he was certainly abroad when this poem was originally published; but by this date he had returned and was a respectable citizen and a well-known historian. ESTC records 13 copies (Bodleian, two at Cambridge, Fordham, Illinois, Newberry, Kansas, Texas, Toronto and two at Yale, plus two in Australia); there is a single copy of a variant (with 'second edition' on the title page) at NYPL.
