Cover art by Tim Harris; interior art by Shaun Tan (illustrator). Octavo, stiff colour illustrated wraps, some b&w illustrations, pp 80, vi, remains of price sticker to the front cover. Generally very clean. Very good condition. "Aurealis" is Australia's longest running small-press science-fiction and fantasy magazine. It was launched in September 1990 to provide a market for speculative fiction writers, with a particular emphasis on raising the profile of Australian authors. The issue includes nine short stories, and five full-page b&w illustrations by the now acclaimed Western Australian author Shaun Tan, all signed "Tan, '91". Tan would have been 19 at the time, and these drawings would have been some of his first published work.

stiff wraps. Cover art by Shaun Tan (illustrator). Reprint. Octavo, stiff colour illustrated wraps, some b&w illustrations in text, pp x, 80,76, 78, 76, ii. Covers lightly worn, clean, very good condtion. This is a reissue of the first four issues of "Aurealis", with a new introduction written for this collectors' edition by George Turner and a new foreword by the editors Dirk Strasser and Stephen Higgins. "Aurealis" is Australia's longest running small-press science-fiction and fantasy magazine. It was launched in September 1990 to provide a market for speculative fiction writers, with a particular emphasis on raising the profile of Australian authors. The new introduction and foreword for this combined collectors' edition reflect on the success of the first four issues of "Aurealis", and the state of science fiction publishing in Australia generally. The four issues here include a wide variety of short stories and feature articles, with occasional b&w illustrations. The colour cover illustration for this edition is by the now acclaimed Western Australian artist Shaun Tan. There are also two full page b&w illustrations, one of which is signed "Tan '91" and the other is not visibly signed but is in his style. The interior ilustrations are not credited on the copyright page, but some later issues (see for example issue 5) credit Shaun Tan for the interior art. Tan would have been 18 at the time of this collectors' edition, and his colour cover illustration predates his first published book by five years: it is possibly his first published work.

Octavo, stiff colour illustrated wraps, some b&w illustrations, var. pag. Printed sticker price to the front covers of issue, 7, 8, and 9. Title page of issue 7 toned. Issues 7, 8, 10 lightly sunned to the spine. Light crease to corner of issue 13. In general all are clean and are in very good to near-fine condition. [see attached images of this collection] "Aurealis" is Australia's longest running small-press science-fiction and fantasy magazine. It was launched in September 1990 to provide a market for speculative fiction writers, with a particular emphasis on raising the profile of Australian authors. Thse twenty issues of "Aurealis" feature a wide range of short stories, feature articles, book reviews, book news, and more. The magazine also featured Australian illustrators, including the now acclaimed Western Australian artist Shaun Tan (b. 1974). In the following issues the illustrations would have been some of his earliest published work. In Issue 7, the "cover, interior graphics, and interior illustrations are by Shaun Tan". In issue 8 several of the b&w illustrations are signed "Tan '92". The cover art is unsigned, but it is in a similar style to his earlier covers for "Aurealis". In issue 9, there are two signed Tan illustrations, plus interior graphics. In issue 10, there are three signed Tan illustrations, plus interior graphics. In issue 11, there are three signed Tan illustrations, plus interior graphics. In issue 12, there are five signed Tan illustrations, plus interior graphics. In issue 13 the cover illustration is by Tan (a wonderful painting of armour-plated emu warriors in the desert, with an Aboriginal motif painted on their bodies), plus two signed Tan drawings and graphics. Issue 14 has three Tan illustrations. Issue 15 has four. Issue 16 has graphics, Issue 17 has a striking cover illustration by Tan. At this point the design and overall look of the magazine is changing, and the signed Shaun Tan cease around 1997, the year of publication of his first book. Overall this run of issues of "Aurealis" are an interesting, and uncommon, glimpse into the state of Australian science fiction and fantasy in the 1990s.
