First edition of this authoritative survey of the foundations of mathematics by the leading Dutch logician and principal systematizer of the intuitionist program of L. E. J. Brouwer. The work presents a concise but comprehensive review of the three principal foundational schools: intuitionism, formalism, and logicism. It is arranged in four sections. The first examines intuitionism, beginning with the influence of Henri Poincaré and continuing through the French semi-intuitionists and their discussions of Borel sets, finite definability, and the continuum, as well as the early views of Hermann Weyl and the standpoint of Kaufmann, before presenting Brouwer's intuitionism in full. Topics include mathematical intuition, propositional and functional calculus, the continuum, choice sequences, and their applications to arithmetic, algebra, set theory, topology, and geometry. The second section treats the axiomatic method and David Hilbert's proof theory, including metamathematics, the structure of formal systems, the epsilon-function, the consistency problem, and the proofs of Wilhelm Ackermann and John von Neumann, together with the question of completeness. The third surveys alternative standpoints, including those of Gerrit Mannoury and the empiricist approach of Moritz Pasch, while the fourth examines the relationship between mathematics and the natural sciences from formalist, intuitionistic, and comparative perspectives. A compact but influential synthesis of the foundational debates that shaped twentieth-century mathematical logic.…
