As a film editor and writer she contributed to numerous films, including writing scenario and story scripts for several silent films based on Jack London classics. Among these were "Burning Daylight: The Adventures of 'Burning Daylight' in Alaska" (1914), "The Valley of the Moon" (1914), and "The Chechako" (1914). She edited legendary Western film director John Ford's early film "The Iron Horse" (1924). She later became known for her knowledge of Siamese cats and wrote several cat books, including "Cat Tales" published by Farrar Strauss and Young.

Contemporary run-marbled calf boards with gilt boarder, elaborate gilt decoration along the spine, and marbled endpapers. Boards and spine worn, white stains on the front b…oard, the title page and front flyleaf have been torn out (hence no publisher info), rear hinge cracked and possibly lacking flyleaf, and scattered foxing throughout, else very good. The printed "Advertisement to the Stereotype Edition" is dated 1819, hence our estimated date of publication. The family record includes Hettie Gray Baker, born on July 12, 1881, the daughter of Josiah Baker and Lizzie Chipman. Baker was a pioneer for women in the film industry working as a screen writer and film editor, eventually becoming the production editor and censorship representative at Fox studios. She worked on a myriad of films, including adaptations of Jack London's novels. She also wrote books including *195 Cat Tales*. The Women Film Pioneers Project (Columbia University) states: "Hettie Gray Baker, who is as yet undiscovered by film historians, had a long and exceptional career in motion pictures. She was a writer of motion picture titles and scenarios; of library science, theatre, and fan magazine articles; and, later in life, of highly regarded books about cats . The range of her work, however, is not so surprising given that she was employed full-time for the motion picture industry from the early teens through the early 1950s . And in 1922, *Filmplay Journal* described her career as 'pioneerical,' calling her 'one of the most influential people in the production of the films.'" Hettie and her parents make up the final entries found in the Bible; much of it being written on slips of paper and pasted onto the pages (Hettie's death is not recorded). The record extends all the way back to John Baker and Thankful Paddock who were married in 1801, with many birth dates and death dates recorded, and several newspaper clippings pasted in. One clipping talks about the First Parish Brewster Unitarian Universalist church located in Brewster, Massachusetts (to which the family appears to have had a connection to via the Crosby family), one clipping reports the marriage of Hettie's parents, and the rest are obituaries which speak of Captain Judah P. Baker, Captain Bailey Foster, and Captain Frank Foster, among others. A pleasing example of an unusual American Bible with a unique binding and an interesting association.

April 24, 1915 ? San Juan Capistrano Mission, Calif. To Hettie Gray, with love, Pauline." The photo…is creased with a tear at the top, thus good only. A photograph taken at the wedding of actors Allan Dwan and Pauline Bush at the San Juan Capistrano Mission in California and officiated by Father St. John O'Sullivan. While attending the wedding, Mary Pickford and Owen Moore (who were married in 1910) felt inspired to renew their own vows, a ceremony which O'Sullivan also officiated. The impromptu scene was later depicted in a painting by Charles Percy Austin, which remains in the possession of the Mission (we can confirm it has been on display as recently as 2020). This photo shows the two couples together with O'Sullivan and their friend and colleague, fellow actor Donald Crisp, posing in a ruinous corridor of the Mission, which O'Sullivan was in the midst of restoring at the time. The wedding appears to have been a quaint, even clandestine affair. The only real press we found of the event was first printed in the April 7, 1924 edition of *The Los Angeles Times* which dedicates only two short paragraphs to the announcement, the second being a single sentence, "The couple (Dwan and Bush) will take a unique wedding trip, motoring through the mountains of California," with no mention of the Mission, and the only reference to "Miss Pickford" being that Dwan was currently working with her. The recipient of this photograph was Hettie Gray Baker, a pioneer for women in the film industry. We're unsure who wrote this, but it should be noted that this photograph was found in an old family Bible belonging to Hettie Gray Baker and/or her relatives. A fascinating piece of silent-era film history that appears to be unknown as we could find no other examples of this image. Signed.
