Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - After an almost four-year sojourn to Rome, Hertel was appointed a teacher at the Berlin Academy in 1875, a position he left in 1877 to work as a freelance painter. His work comprises still lifes, landscapes and genre paintings as well as 13 tempera paintings for the Imperial Staircase in the Berlin cathedral. - Small tear in upper margin; a few small creases; postmark on verso slightly showing through. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.…

Zustand: guter Zustand. Bleistift auf hellgrauem Velin, verso Nachlaßstempel. 18:33,6 cm. Aus gesundheitlichen Gründen ging Hertel 1863 nach Rom und wurde dort Schüler von Franz Dreber, dessen Einfluß deutlich erkennbar ist.
