Une fiction qui se sert de l'image pour faire le récit d'une aventure et traduire une réflexion théorique sur la photographie. François Hers a, en effet, systématiquement cherché à déterminer la fonction de la photographie dans notre société. Cette recherche, il la concrétise en établissant avec les gens ou les choses qu'il photographie une relation très particulière : il réclame, provoque la réaction et en réponse, il obtient une forte tension qu'il met en scène, il obtient des gestes qui tiennent lieu de mots. Sa présence dans un hôpital, une école d'art, une usine, une agence de presse ou de publicité devient happening, performance, interactions provocantes entre les participants. Ce livre mêle l'expérience vécue, les considérations personnelles avec des photographies d'un réalisme étonnant parce que François Hers n'hésite pas à aller chercher, là où elle se trouve, l'image de ses obsessions. On le retrouve avec la police, seul en Patagonie, dans la révolution portugaise, la société française ou dans les rues, les maisons et les fêtes de son pays d'origine, la Belgique. Le texte qui appartient dans sa forme finale à Jean-François Chevrier n'explique rien. Mais c'est lui qui a servi de fil conducteur au montage des images et les deux se combinent pour dresser un portrait convaincant d'un grand photographe. Ils décrivent les rencontres et les événements marquants d'une carrière commencée dans les années soixante qui se poursuit avec la participation, en 1972, au groupe Viva, puis avec les livres, les expositions, les amours et les choix d'une vie mouvementée. Enfin ce livre présente bien l'originalité de l'attitude de François Hers dans ïa photographie actuelle. Il la considère et comme un art et comme un métier. Quand on lui demande s'il pense devoir choisir, il répond que c'est un faux problème et que cette contradiction est la chance d'un art moderne qui s'inscrit dans une très vieille culture.
