En este contexto, la península ibérica constituye uno de los espacios geográficos fundamentales para analizar estas problemáticas, como así lo demuestran los diversos proyectos de investigación sobre la problemática financiados por diversos programas de la Unión Europea, España o Portugal. Iberia representa uno de los pocos lugares donde se puede hablar de coexistencia entre Neandertales y Homo sapiens, y se puede establecer cómo y cuándo se produjo la sustitución de una especie por otra. En este volumen monográfico se incluyen varios trabajos relacionados con la temática de los neandertales y su sustitución por los primero Homo sapiens paleolíticos. Las materias abarcadas incluyen una gran diversidad incluyendo trabajos tecno-tipológicos, paleoantropológicos, reconstrucción corporal, estudio de huellas fósiles o icnitas, uso del lenguaje y estrategias comportamentales y de subsistencia entre otros que abarcan toda la geografía ibérica incluyendo España y Portugal desde yacimientos clásicos a los que se están excavando e investigando en la actualidad. Este volumen será sin ninguna duda un referente en los próximos años, y para las siguientes generaciones, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que todos los trabajos presentados pertenecen a investigaciones de alto nivel realizadas por los investigadores ibéricos que llevan a cabo las investigaciones más punteras en la actualidad.
